Brown, Panzo To Represent Team Canada at Globl Jam In Toronto

TORONTO, ONTARIO - Iona University men's basketball incoming graduate transfers Joel Brown and Wheza Panzo will represent their home country Canada on its U23 national team at the 2023 GLOBL JAM from July 12-16 in Toronto's Mattamy Athletic Centre, the former Maple Leaf Gardens. The four team round-robin event with gold and bronze medal finales features U23 Team Canada, U23 Team Germany, an African Continent U23 Select Team and the University of Kentucky which will represent the United States and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

Brown and Panzo are Ontario natives and childhood friends from the Greater Toronto Area. Though high school and collegiate paths took them in different directions, they have rejoined together in New Rochelle and will play their final NCAA seasons for the Gaels this upcoming season. Brown was a four-year starter at Pac-12 California where he scored 587 points and dished out 342 assists in 122 appearances and 93 starts. He boasts a career assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.62 and is coming off career-highs in virtually every statistical category with the Bears last season. Panzo joins the Iona program after four seasons at Stetson University. He appeared in 120 games and made 44 starts for the Hatters with 655 career points. Panzo was one of the top three point threats in the country in 2022-23, connecting on 76 three-pointers at a 46.9% clip.

GLOBL JAM FIVES is a 5-on-5 Under-23 basketball tournament featuring women's and men's teams from around the world. Brown and Panzo will join other top Canadian athletes currently playing on NCAA teams. Full rosters are not yet available as well as video streaming availability in the United States. The tournament can be seen in Canada on Sportsnet. More information about the event can be found on Basketball Canada's website.

The Iona men's basketball program enters its first season under head coach Tobin Anderson. Brown and Panzo are a part of the largest recruiting class in program history. The Gaels will boast at least 11 newcomers to go along with lone returner, graduate student Osborn Shema.
