Iona MBB Falls at Quinnipiac, 91-87

HAMDEN, CT - The Iona University men's basketball team was outscored 19-3 over the final five minutes in a heartbreaking 91-87 loss at Quinnipiac in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at M&T Bank Arena. Graduate Idan Tretout led Gael four scorers with 10 or more, posting a game-high 30 points.

THE RUNDOWN

Iona's largest lead of the first half was seven. Graduate Wheza Panzo's three-pointer at 13:56 gave the Gaels a 19-12 lead. A second Panzo dagger three and a half minutes later put Iona ahead 25-18. Graduate Joel Brown made it 27-20 with a strong take to the basket at 8:33. Iona took a four point lead into halftime.
 
Iona scored 13 points in the first 3:15 seconds of the second half and jumped out to a 14-point advantage. During the 13-3 run, the Gaels saw a pair of three pointers from graduate Osborn Shema, a three ball and a dunk by Tretout and a bucket from junior Greg Gordon on the team's first possession of the frame. Quinnipiac got as close as six points with eight minutes to play, but the Maroon & Gold scored seven of the next nine points to regain a double-digit advantage with five and a half to play. Tretout scored eight points for Iona a 1:25 span to give the visitors an 84-72 cushion with 5:32 to play. During the decisive 19-3 run that would ensue, Quinnipiac shot 6-for-8 from the field with two three pointers, 5-of-6 from the line and no turnovers and the Gaels converted 1-of-6 shot attempts, 1-of-2 from the foul line and posted three turnovers.
 
The Gaels led for 35 and a half minutes in the contest and trailed for just 1:36 on three occasions: a 21-second span in the fourth minute of the contest, a 46-second span in the 16th minute and for the final 28 seconds following Savion Lewis' go ahead layup late in the contest.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Tretout recorded his second 30+ point effort of the season, shooting 11-for-19 from the field, 6-for-11 from long distance and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. He added three steals and a block.
  • Panzo posted 15 points, shooting 5-for-8 with four three-pointers.
  • Gordon had a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double, his team leading fourth of the season.
  • Shema connected on a career-high four three-point attempts to account for his 12 points.

THE OPPONENT

  • Doug Young had a Quinnipiac-high 24 points for the home team off the bench.
  • Amarri Tice added 19 points and eight rebounds.
  • Matt Balanc and Paul Otieno each had 15 points. Otieno completed a double-double with 10 rebounds.
  • Lewis recorded 10 points and a game-high nine assists.

TEAM STATITSICS

  • Quinnipiac out shot Iona 58.9%-49.2%. The home team connected on 19-of-27 (70.4%) attempts in the second half.
  • The Gaels were 14-of-30 (46.7%) from long distance for the game after hitting nine in the first half. The Bobcats were 5-for-16 (31.6%) from downtown.
  • Quinnipiac held a 27-22 rebounding advantage.
  • Iona had 16 assists and 13 turnovers while its opponent posted 15 and 14.

The Gaels are back in action next Friday at Siena in their lone game next week.
