JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Iona University men's basketball team fell behind early, and a second half comeback effort fell short in a 69-57 loss at Saint Peters in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Run Baby Run Arena. Graduate

THE RUNDOWN
Iona struggled early on the offensive end scoring just seven points over the first 12 minutes of the contest. The Peacocks mounted a 14 point advantage with an 11-0 run and led 21-7 at the 8:20 mark. It would be the largest lead of the half for the home team. Iona chipped away and trailed by nine at the break following an Aranguren jumper on the team's final possession.

Saint Peter's led by as many as 22 points when Mohamed Sow hit a three-pointer from the wing at 11:12 to make the score 49-27. Iona responded with 12 straight points capped by a
Wheza Panzo three-pointer with 7:37 remaining to cut the deficit to 10. The Gaels got as close as eight points on two occasions on an Aranguren layup just over a minute later and with
Idan Tretout's free throw with 64 ticks to go. Saint Peter's tallied just three field goals 10+ minutes of the game but was 14-of-15 from the free throw line during the span to hold off the Gaels.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Shema posted a season-best 15 points in his fourth game back from injury, shooting 5-for-10 from the field with a career-high three three-pointers. He added three rebounds and three blocks.
- Aranguren scored eight of his 12 points in the second half and shot 5-for-6 for the game. He matched a team-best with five rebounds.
- Panzo scored all eight of his points in the final 11 minutes of the contest. He posted five assists, three steals and a block.
- Joel Brown had seven points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
THE OPPONENT
- Corey Washington scored all 20 of his points in the second half with the help of an 11-for-12 effort from the free throw line. After missing all four shot attempts in the first, he finished 4-of-10 from the field while adding nine rebounds.
- Armoni Zeigler added 14 points and three assists.
- Latrell Reid and Brent Bland each had nine points. Reid posted five rebounds and three assists while Bland connected on three long distance attempts.
TEAM STATS
- Saint Peter's outshot (40.4%-33.3%) and outrebounded 37-25 Iona in the contest though it held just a 4-2 advantage on second chance points.
- The Peacocks were 22-of-25 from the line while the Gaels converted 11-of-14 in the 12 point defeat.
- The Maroon & Gold had 15 assists on 19 shots made and recorded 11 turnovers. Saint Peter's had 13 assists and 19 turnovers as the Iona led 17-11 on points off the turnovers.
