Iona Swim Women Edge Sacred Heart; Men Top Wagner at Hynes

Before a loud and enthusiastic, near capacity crowd at the Hynes Pool on Homecoming Saturday, the Iona University Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Team each picked up a win.

MEET SUMMARY

The Iona women went down to the final race trailing by one-point and needing to take first and third in the 400-Free Relay and did exactly that to defeat the MAAC's newest member, Sacred Heart University 123-118. The women went back and forth against the Seahawks of Wagner, before falling 128-99. The win and loss take the women to 3-1 on the season.

The Iona men rolled from the start with a pair of 1-2 diving efforts by Junior Dylan Riccio and freshmen Joel Picard to 9 of the 13 top spots to finish with a 136-98 win. The victory raises the Men's record to 2-1 on the season

The Iona women were only able to take one overall individual gold medal on the day, where freshmen Raegan O'Brien touched first in the 200-Back at 2:09.83. "Overall the women were in every race today and every heat was extremely close. I have no complaints with the efforts today and think for the first back-to-back competitions, this was a great experience for later in the season.," commented Coach Nick Cavataro.

Both the Iona men and women posted wins Friday at Hynes over Long Island University.

Picard was joined in the winner's circle by Graduate Student Michael Faughnan, who posted outstanding early season efforts in the 200 and 500-yard Freestyle at 1:39.77 and 4:37.43, respectively. Other wins came from Kieran Egan in the 200-Backstroke at 1:52.96; Matthew Loftus in the 200m-Individual Medley at 1:58.67 and Nathaniel Wales in the 100m-Freestyle at 47.08.

The Iona 400-Freestyle Relays continued to impress with the women's quarter of Megan Josephs (54.020; Julia Moser (54.15); Ashley Benkert (53.96) and Kate Kennedy (54.71) going 3:36.84 five seconds ahead of SHU.

The Iona men's team of Egan (48.12); Wales (46.90), Harry Platt (47.06) and Faughnan (44.97) rolled to a 3:09.58 time.

UP NEXT

The teams repeat the back-to-back meets next weekend when they travel to Holy Cross on Friday at 4:00pm and face Providence College on Saturday at 1:00pm.
