Iona WSOC Bested by Canisius, 1-0

NEW ROCHELLE, NY— The Iona University women's soccer team fell to league leading Canisius, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffs scored the lone goal of the contest in the fourth minute to best the Gaels in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup at Mazzella Field.

Rookie goalkeeper Kayla Kalbaugh made a career-high eight saves against Canisius. First-year forward Dolene Smith led Iona with two shots. Senior Kedarjah Lewis and sophomore Marissa Graziano both added a shot attempt.

GAME SUMMARY

Canisius worked the ball early in the Iona zone from the opening whistle. The Golden Griffs caused a turnover in the fourth minute as Erin Weir dished the ball to Emma Oliphant to drive past the Gaels defense and fired the shot from four yards out past the reach of Kalbaugh for the 1-0 lead.

From there momentum for the remainder of the opening half was all Canisius. Kalbaugh made three saves for Iona in the first half.

The Gaels looked to answer early in the second half as Smith rifled a shot just left of the post from 12-yards out. Shortly after in the 50th minute, Smith fired another shot from the left side, but it caromed off the crossbar and back into play.

Kalbaugh continued to stop the Canisius offense with two more saves in the next few minutes. Play from there settled down as both teams traded time of possession. Iona got another look in the 80th minute as Lewis missed just right of the goal with the rebound shot attempt.

Cansius looked to capitalize on a breakaway attempt in the 84th minute but Kalbaugh made back-to-back stops to keep it a one score game.

The Gaels had one last look to find the equalizer in the 88th minute off the corner kick attempt. Graduate student Kate McNally sent in the cross to the center of the box as Graziano battled through traffic for the header but the shot missed just right of the post. Canisius held on for the 1-0 win and its eighth straight win.
