NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University volleyball team dropped a five-set decision to Rider in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Hynes Center. By virtue of other results in the league on Sunday, the Gaels secured a spot in the 2024 MAAC Championship, held in two weeks at Siena College.
THE RUNDOWN
Three of the five sets were decided by just two points including both set wins by the Gaels. After taking the first set 25-23, Iona took Rider to the limit in set two before falling 26-24. The Broncs took a 2-1 lead with a 25-16 win in set three. The Gaels evened the match at 2-2 with a 27-25 win in set four. Rider overcame an 8-2 deficit in the deciding set, winning 15-11.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Rookie Taylor Timko led a balanced Gaels attack with four double-digit scorers and kill totals with a team-high 14. She increased her season-high a day after recording 12 vs. Saint Peter's. Timko also added two assisted blocks to run her point total to 15.
- Freshman Mia Jegers added 13 kills, eight digs and two aces to match her classmate with 15 points.
- Graduate Grace Ehler had 11 kills, seven digs and two blocks.
- Graduate Jen Soto added 10 kills, three blocks and two aces.
- Sophomore libero Sanem Bas had a match-high 17 digs and electrified the Iona faithful with an Iona season-high six aces including four during one rally in the opening frame.
- Sophomore Buse Tinaz posted a season-best six kills in the loss.
- Senior setter Emma Vu recorded a 28-assist, 10-dig double double, while her counterpart Jordan Ader had 22 assists and seven digs.
THE OPPONENT
- Paige Giehtbrock and Kiannisha Santiago each had 18 points to lead the visitors.
- Giehtbrock posted 16 kills and 16 digs and hit .457 with two blocks.
- Santiago had 15 kills and four blocks.
- Molly Rhode added eight blocks.
- Setter Riley Frye had 28 assists and nine digs.
UP NEXT
The Gaels finish off their season with a two-game stand at the Hynes Center next weekend. Saturday takes on Quinnipiac at 1 p.m. Saturday, and Merrimack on Senior Day Sunday
