Iona Water Polo Falls At Princeton

PRINCETON, NJ –  After failing to score in the opening period, the Iona men's water polo team fell 22-6 to number-six ranked Princeton University in a Northeast Water Polo Conference road match here this evening.

GAME SUMMARY

Junior Rastko Jevdjovic led the Maroon and Gold with two goals, while graduate co-captain Mohamed Refaat, junior Matthew Mischlich, freshman Hugh Coyle, freshman Pavle Musikic had one goal each. The Gaels scored six goals on 27 shots on five assists with two by Mischlich. In goal, junior Aleksandar Slavkovic had two saves on Tigers shots, made three steals and 22 goals against. 

On defense, the Gaels made 16 steals with three by Mischlich. Jevdojovic blocked one Princeton shot. Iona drew  Princeton 12 kickouts with five by Musikic, including one five-meter penalty, while being ejected 13 times with no five-meter penalties. Senior co-captain Luksa Vlasic and Musikic were disqualified with three ejections apiece. The Gaels turned the ball over 19 times. Iona scored on two of five man-up chances, while Princeton scored three goals on five man-up chances. Scanlon won one of four swim-offs.

Princeton got on the board first with two straight scores for a 2-0 edge with 3:03 gone in the match. The hosts tacked on three more goals in the closing 3:30 for 5-0 advantage going into the second period.  Iona failed to score in the opening period on five shots.

After the Tigers opened the second quarter with another unanswered goal, Refaat ended the Gaels offensive drought with a five-meter goal to get Iona back within five 6-1 with 5:38 left. Princeton struck to go up six 7-1, but Coyle's man-up goal followed by Musikic cut the home edge to four 7-3 with 3:13 on the clock. Four consecutive Tigers goals built an eight-goal 11-3 advantage with 1:33 remaining to halftime. 

Continuing a 6-0 run, the hosts needed only 1:58 into the third period to go up ten 13-3, but on the Gaels next trip down the pool, Jevdjovic trimmed the Tigers lead back to nine 13-4. Two straight Princeton scores upped the Tigers advantage to twelve 16-4 with 2:37 to go. Jevdjovic's second goal in the period pulled Iona back within 11 until Princeton scored with 41 ticks left for a 17-5 cushion going into the final quarter.

With 1:02 gone in the fourth period, Princeton capitalized on a man-up chance, then Mischlich did the same to cut the home lead to 18-6 with 6:34 left. The Tigers sealed their 22-6 win with four unanswered goals, including a last-second score, in the closing 4:48.

Next Saturday, Iona travels to Providence to take on number-19 ranked Brown University at 2 p.m. ET. On Sunday, Iona faces the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 10 a.m., and number-16 ranked Harvard University at 3 p.m.
