BOSTON, MA - The Iona women's lacrosse program opened the 2024 season on the road battling the Terriers, Gaels fell short in the opener falling 18-13. Kira Varada and Micaela FitzPatrick led the offense with four goals & three assists each. Varada also added a team high nine draw controls.

Lauren Sweeney played 56 minutes making ten saves, freshman
Ava Giugliano relieved her for the final four minutes making her first career save. Sweeney and Grad student
Emily Stewart led the team with two ground balls. Sophomore
Arianna Burns recorded a team high three caused turnovers.
First quarter started slow for the Gaels, Stewart notched the Gaels lone goal of the quarter as they entered the second down 5-1. Iona's offense woke up in the second out scoring the Terriers 6-5, entering the halftime break down 10-7. Sophomore
Lindsey Grove scored her first career save in the second quarter.
The third quarter saw little offense from both teams with two goals scored on each side, Varada and Stewart each recorded their hat tricks in the third. Iona trailed by three entering the final 15 minutes.
Despite matching goal for goal with the home team in the fourth the Gaels were unable to comeback for the victory, FitzPatrick recorded her third and fourth goal along with Varada notching her fourth and junior
Kacie Scarduzio added a tally herself.
As a team the Gaels scored 13 goals on 33 shots with 23 on net. FitzPatrick scored the Gaels two power play goals on six opportunities. Totaled 13 ground balls, 16 draw controls, and five caused turnovers.Â
