CONWAY, SC — The Iona University softball team started play at Chanticleer Showdown on Friday afternoon, dropping a 7-0 decision to Michigan State. The Gaels were slated to square off against Oakland in the evening, but that contest got canceled due to inclement weather.
GAME SUMMARY
The Spartans struck early Friday morning, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Capitalizing on a throwing error on a first and third steal, a triple to right field and wild pitch all with one-out.
Michigan State extended the lead with a two-out single to right center in the second. The Spartans capped the scoring in the sixth inning with three runs on four hits to bring the final to 7-0.
Iona was held to just three hits in the opener, a single by freshman
MJ Nicholson in the fourth, a bunt single by sophomore
Alivia Lichtner in the fifth and a single to right in the seventh by sophomore
Brooke Acker. The Gaels struck out a season-high 12 times at the plate against the Spartans.
