Iona MBB Takes Down Manhattan in MAAC Opening Round

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - The No. 7 seed Iona University men's basketball team topped No. 10 Manhattan 60-57 in an opening round matchup of the 2024 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship at Boardwalk Hall. The Gaels' All-MAAC tandem of graduate Idan Tretout and freshman Jeremiah Quigley scored 24 and 17 points respectively to lead all scorers in the game. Iona advances to tomorrow's quarterfinal round against No. 2 Fairfield in a 9 p.m. tip off in Atlantic City Wednesday night.

THE RUNDOWN

The first seven minutes of the contest saw four tie scores and three lead changes. An 8-0 Jaspers run over a 100 second span sparked their largest lead of the half at eight points with just over eight minutes left in the frame. Iona closed the gap two points at the break on a Jean Aranguren bucket on its final offensive possession.

After trading trips to the free throw line in the opening minute of the second half, Iona scored 10 straight points and changed the lead for the final time in the game. Tretout and classmates Osborn Shema and Wheza Panzo all scored in the run which resulted in a 41-34 advantage with 15:48 to play. The Jaspers answered with six straight to close within one, but the run was stopped by a corner three ball by Tretout with the shot clock expiring. It started a mini 8-2 run to put the Gaels ahead by seven again at 11:01. Manhattan made a three-point game with four straight and trailed 49-46 at the 8:26 mark. After 90 seconds of scoreless basketball, Tretout drained his third long ball of the half with just under seven minutes remaining. The Gaels kept it a two-possession game until the final 35 seconds. After a Quigley free throw made it a five point game with 49 ticks left, Manhattan came down and made a three to cut it to 59-57. After an Iona turnover in the backcourt, a foul was called with 2.5 remaining and a chance to tie it. The Jaspers missed both free throws and Quigley was fouled again and hit a free throw to seal the final margin.
