Iona Softball Spurned by Fordham in Midweek Matchup

BRONX, NY — The Iona University softball team held an early lead on Wednesday afternoon but were unable to combat a Fordham rally to fall, 9-5 at Bahoshy Field.

Senior Emma Capuano and sophomore Brooke Acker both recorded two hits. Senior Kayla Haywood recorded a three-run home run for the Maroon & Gold.

GAME SUMMARY

Fordham tacked on one run in the bottom of the first on a two-out single to left center field for the early lead.

Sophomore Alivia Lichtner opened the third inning with a one-out single to left field. Capuano followed with a base knock to right center. Haywood then stepped to the dish and sent the 3-1 offering over the center field wall to give the Gaels the lead. Iona got two more singles in the inning by Acker and senior Kaylin Flukey for a pair of runners on with two outs. Acker would score from second on a misplay at second by Fordham for the 4-1 lead.

The Rams cut into the deficit in the fourth with a two-out two-run double to center field to make it a 4-3 game.

Fordham grabbed momentum in the fifth with a leadoff home run to tie the game up. The home team added five more runs on four hits to take a 9-4 advantage.

Iona capped the scoring in the seventh as Capuano lined a one-out double to left field. She would come around to score on a two-out single up the middle to bring the final score to 9-5.
