Iona Water Polo Defeats Connecticut College In Final Home Game

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Leading all the way, the Iona women's water polo team scored a 14-4 non-conference win over Connecticut College tonight at Hynes Pool on Prostate Cancer Awareness night.

Sophomore Sadie Sallas led the Maroon and Gold (10-12 overall, 3-2 MAAC) with three goals on three shots, while graduate student Lily Graham and junior Remy Ickes scored two goal each. Senior Kaya Hart, senior Amelia Gonzalez, senior Jori Aventurado, junior Addison Collins, sophomore Lea Preston, sophomore Isabella Adams and freshman Bella Morquecho all had one goal apiece. The Gaels scored 14 goals on 22 shots on five assists. Adams won all four swim-offs.

In goal, senior Lily Morris had three saves on six Camels shots, and had no goals against in the first period.  For the rest of the match, Freshman Zasha Soler had 14 saves on 19 Camels shots, and had four goals against. On defense, the Gaels made five steals.  Iona drew Camels five kickouts with two by Morquecho, including three five-meter penalties, while being ejected twice, including one five-meter penalty ejection. The Gaels turned the ball over eight times. Iona scored on one of two woman-up chances, while Connecticut did not score on one woman-up chance.  The Gaels blocked three Camels shots.

With just 1:08 gone in the match, Hart got the Gaels on the board first, followed by consecutive goals by Sallas, Collins and Graham for a 4-0 Iona lead with 5:08 remaining in the first period. Three more unanswered scores by Ickes and Graham, their second goal each, continued a 7-0 run with 2:39 left.

The Camels offensive drought ended with 1:41 expired in the second period, but Gonzalez answered followed by Preston's five-meter penalty goal for a 9-1 home advantage with two minutes to intermission. With just 11.6 ticks on the clock, Aventurado buried a five-meter penalty shot for a 10-1 Gaels halftime lead.

With Iona head coach Brian Kelly playing his entire squad, the Gaels recorded only one goal in the third period. A Camels goal with 1:53 remaining cut the home edge to eight 10-2, but 48 seconds later, Morquecho's five-meter penalty shot restored a nine-goal 11-2 Iona advantage going into the final period.

Sallas' second goal put Iona back up ten 12-2, then she struck again for a 11-goal home edge 13-2 with 4:38 on the clock. Following a visitors' score, Adams sealed the win 14-3, despite a Camels five-meter penalty goal with four ticks left.

Kelly was pleased with his squad's defensive work as the Gaels continued a three-game win streak after last Saturday's home Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference wins over Mount Saint Mary's and Siena. "Our defense and our goalies are playing very well right now," Kelly said. "We're looking forward to keeping our [three-game] winning streak going."

Next Sunday, April 7, the Gaels travel to Villanova, PA, for two MAAC matches against Virginia Military Institute at 1 p.m., and Wagner College at 5 p.m.
