Iona Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Manhattan

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over rival Manhattan on Friday afternoon. The Gaels earned a 4-2 win in game one then utilized a walk-off single from sophomore Hailey Guerrero to win the second game, 6-5 in extra innings at Donald E. Walsh Field.

Guerrero led the Maroon & Gold with three runs batted in the two games. She recorded three hits over the two games as did seniors Jamie Sheeran, Kayla Haywood, and sophomore Alivia Lichtner. Junior Samantha Rieb recorded two wins in the circle, pitching nine innings against the Jaspers.

GAME ONE: IONA 4, MANHATTAN 2

The Gaels got going early as senior Emma Capuano led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run over the center field wall.

Manhattan responded in the second, capitalizing on a botched throw from the Gaels on a first and third steal that allowed the lead runner to score and knot things up at 1-1.

The Jaspers utilized a two-out double down the left field line in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.

Iona answered swiftly in the bottom of the third as sophomore Brooke Acker recorded a one-out double down the right field line. Sheeran followed with a double to the gap in right center to tie the game back up. After a strikeout, Guerrero posted the third double of the inning, a line drive to the gap in left center for the 3-2 lead.

Haywood led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a triple to right center. Sheeran posted her second RBI double of the game two batters later to push the score to 4-2.

Rieb shut the door on the Jaspers, surrendering just two hits over the final four innings to secure the win.

The Gaels registered eight hits in game one as Sheeran and Lichtner both led with two hits each. Rieb surrendered just four hits while giving up just one earned run while striking out four batters.

GAME TWO: IONA 6, MANHATTAN 5 (8 Inn.)

Manhattan jumped out to an early lead to start game two, recording an RBI double and a two-out RBI single to go up, 2-0 in the first inning.

Iona scratched one run back in the bottom half of the first on an RBI double from Acker. The Gaels threatened with runners on second and third with two outs, but the Jaspers escaped the inning with a groundout to the pitcher.

Manhattan extended its lead back to two in the second inning on a throwing error on the heels of a wild pitch.

Offense slowed down over the next few innings before freshman Leah Palmer picked up a one-out single in the fourth inning. Sophomore Hannah Werth followed that up with a double to left center for the first run of the inning. After a lineout Haywood stepped to the plate and lined a double to left center to tie the game up, 3-3.

Both teams traded runs in the fifth inning as Manhattan took back the lead on a one-out RBI single to center field. Iona responded with an RBI double from Guerrero in the bottom half of the inning.

The Gaels took the lead for the first time in game two in the sixth inning as Haywood connected on a 1-0 offering for a one-out solo home run over the center field fence.

Manhattan continued to fight in the seventh inning, getting runners on the corners with one-out. A sacrifice fly to left field tied the game up once again at 5-5.

As the game went into extras, the Jaspers got the go-ahead run to second base with one-out. Rieb shut down the inning with a strikeout looking and a ground out to shortstop.

Capuano got on base with one-out in the bottom of the eighth on a six-pitch walk. Haywood then recorded a four-pitch walk to give Iona two runners on base. Acker then reached on a fielder's choice with Manhattan getting the force out at second as Capuano advanced to third. An intentional walk to Sheeran set up the bases loaded for Guerrero. She delivered the walk-off game winner by lining a single to right center to give the Gaels the 6-5 win.
