DELAND, FL - The Iona women's lacrosse team surges back from a three goal deficit in the second half to take down Stetson, 17-16. Senior Micaela FitzPatrick recorded two goals and five assists, her seven points led the team and she notched 100 career points.
Emily Stewart and
Kira Varada combined for seven goals, Stewart added a hat trick of assists as well. Along with FitzPatrick,
Kate Krueger, &
Laine Walterson recorded two goals each.
Alexa Maggiacomo,
Arianna Burns,
Kacie Scarduzio, and
Maliya Haddock also found the back of the net. Iona assisted on 10 of the 17 goals, registered 44 shots with 32 of them on net. Stewart led the team with eight draw controls and Varada added seven herself, collecting 22 total as a team.
In net
Lauren Sweeney got the start for the Gaels, she made 12 saves and allowed 16 goals in 60 minutes of play. She faced 34 shots, with 28 of them on net. Sweeney set a team high with six ground balls, the most she has recorded this season. Varada set a game high with five caused turnovers. As a team the Maroon & Gold caused 14 Hatters turnovers. Â
Iona's offense was hot to start today's game scoring five goals in the first. But with a two goal lead entering the second the Maroon & Gold's offense was shut down as the home team outscored them 6-1 and they took a three goal lead entering the half time break. The third proved to be a pivotal quarter for the Maroon & Gold, they outscored Stetson 6-3 and knotted things back up at 12-12. In the fourth the Gaels outscored the Hatters for the third quarter of the day, Burns found the back of the net with 3:38 left on the clock for the game winner.
Iona returns home on March 13 for their second home game of the year against American. Game is scheduled for a 1pm start.Â
