Iona Softball Bests Rider, 3-1 For Series Win

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University softball team earned its fourth consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series win after defeating Rider, 3-1 in the series finale. The Gaels improve to 9-3 in MAAC play with the victory at Donald E. Walsh Field.
 
Junior Samantha Rieb spun a complete game in the circle for the Maroon & Gold, striking out a career-high seven batters. Senior Emma Capuano, junior Brianna Bailey and freshman MJ Nicholson all drove in a run for the Gaels. Bailey led the team with two hits against the Broncs. 

GAME SUMMARY

After the high-powered offensive display in yesterday's doubleheader, the finale was a pitcher's duel as both teams looked to capture the series win.
 
The Gaels were held to just one hit through the first three innings of play while Rieb held the Broncs to four hits in the first four innings while striking out four batters.
 
Sophomore Hailey Guerrero got Iona going in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff double to left center. Senior Jamie Sheeran followed with a single to shortstop to put runners at the corners. Nicholson stepped to the plate and singled the 3-2 offering through the right side for the first run off the game. After a pop up, Bailey connected on an RBI double to right center to take a 2-0 lead.
 
Rider cut the deficit to one in the in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly to right field.
 
The Gaels punched back in the bottom of the frame as senior Kaylin Flukey went first pitch swinging for a single to right field to lead things off. Bailey also went first pitch hunting for a double to right field to put runners on second and third with no outs. Capuano lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to jump ahead, 3-1. Rider escaped trouble with a pop up and flyout to end the inning.
 
Rieb retired the Broncs in order in the seventh for the complete game and series win for the Maroon & Gold.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Iona outhit the Broncs, 8-5 for the game. The first five batters all registered a hit for the Gaels.
  • Bailey registered her first multi-hit game of the season with a pair of doubles in the finale.
  • Senior Kayla Haywood extended her hitting streak to nine games with a leadoff single in the first inning.
  • Sophomore Brooke Acker has reached base safely in nine consecutive game.
  • Rieb recorded her seventh complete game of the season. She set a new career-high with seven strikeouts against the Broncs.

UP NEXT

Iona continues the homestand with a weekend series against Canisius at Donald E. Walsh Field. The Gaels and Golden Griffins start the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13 beginning at noon.
