Iona Water Polo Falls to Marist In MAAC Semifinal

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Leading by one, then tied with at two with second-seeded host Marist College early in the second quarter, the fourth-seeded Iona University women's water polo gave up six straight goals, while managing only four more scores to fall 15-6 in today's second semifinal match at the 2024 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship.

Senior Kaya Hart (five shots) and freshman Kaitlyn Williams (four shots) led the Maroon and Gold (14-16 overall) with two goals each, while graduate student Mia Tovar and freshman Bella Morquecho had one goal each. The Gaels scored six goals on 24 shots on four assists with two by graduate student Lily Graham. Sophomore Lola Trujillo won all four swim-offs.

In goal, senior Lily Morris had five saves on 20 Red Foxes shots, made one steal and had 15 goals against. On defense, the Gaels made seven steals with four by Trujillo. Iona drew 12 Red Foxes kick-outs with four by Tovar and three by sophomore Sadie Sallas, while being ejected nine times. Senior Amelia Gonzalez and Sallas blocked one shot each. The Gaels turned the ball over seven times.Iona scored on one of 12 woman-up chances, while Marist scored four goals on nine woman-up chances. 

With 46 seconds gone in the match, Marist scored on a woman-up chance, but Morquecho answered to tie the score at one each with 5:31 left in the opening period. Neither squad scored for the rest of the first quarter as the one-all tie carried into the second period. Hart needed just 1:14 into the second quarter to put Iona up one 2-1, then Marist re-knotted the game at two on its next trip down the pool with 6:20 left. The hosts continued a 5-0 run with four straight scores for a three-goal advantage at the 1:17 mark and a 6-2 halftime lead.

The Red Foxes sustained a 7-0 run into the third period with a breakaway score for five-score 7-2 lead with 5:35 remaining. Williams broke the Gaels offensive drought to pull Iona back within four 7-3 with 3:50 to go. The Red Foxes tacked on four straight goals for an eight-score margin with 1:19 on the clock to take a 11-3 advantage into the final period. 

Marist carried a 6-0 streak into the fourth quarter to take a nine-score 12-3 edge with 1:46 gone, then on Iona's next possession, Tovar struck to trim the home advantage to eight 12-4. With two consecutive goals, the Red Foxes mounted a ten-goal 14-4 lead with 4:31 remaining. William's second score 1:36 later got Iona within nine 14-5. After a home score with 59 ticks remaining, Hart scored her final Gaels goal 12 ticks later.
