Iona WLAX Falls to Mount St. Mary's in Opening Round of MAAC Championship

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona women's lacrosse historical season came to an end as they fell to Mount St. Mary's 17-13 in the opening round of the 2024 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championships. The Co-Midfielder of the year Kira Varada scored a team high five goals.  

Both Maliya Haddock and Emily Stewart scored a hat trick each, while Alexa Maggiacomo and Micaela FitzPatrick found the back of the net once each. Haddock led the team with two assists as the Gaels assisted on five of the team's 13 goals. Stewart scored the Gaels lone goal off of free positions chances.  

As a team the Gaels took 36 shots with 22 being on net. Both teams collected 17 drawn controls each, Kira tied the game high with six despite sitting out the final eight minutes due to her receiving her second yellow card of the game. Stewart and freshman Calen Norton recorded four draw controls each. Stewart finishes her career with 241 draw controls as she holds the program record.

Lauren Sweeney allowed 14 goals on 26 shots faced, she made 8 saves. Junior goalkeeper Sofia Votto saw four minutes of action when Sweeney picked up a yellow card and had to sit out, Votto allowed three goals. 

As a team Iona collected 10 ground balls, Varada led the team with three. Rookies Norton and Amelia Kelly notched two caused two turnovers each and were tied for the team high. As a team they caused seven of the 13 Mount turnovers. Iona was called for 28 fouls compared to 13 called on the opposition.  

This season the Maroon & Gold set program records with most single season wins and conference wins. Varada & Stewart became the first two Gaels in Iona history to record 200+ draw controls. Varada's 83 draw controls this year set a new single-season record that she previously set in her freshman season.
