HAMDEN, Conn. — The Iona University softball team pushed its winning streak to five on Saturday afternoon, earning a 7-1 win in game one and 7-6 victory in game two for a doubleheader sweep over Quinnipiac. The Gaels improve to 7-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with the pair of wins at Quinnipiac Softball Field.
Senior
Jamie Sheeran recorded a two-run home run in game one and the go-ahead two-run double in game two to lead the Maroon & Gold with five runs batted in. Senior
Kayla Haywood led the way with four hits in the two contests. Junior
Samantha Rieb registered the wins in the circle after a complete game in game one and three shutout innings of relief in game two.
GAME ONE: IONA 7, QUINNIPIAC 1
Iona's offense started the opening game strong with a leadoff single from senior
Emma Capuano and a double to left center field by Haywood. After a lineout to first a walk to Sheeran loaded the bases. The Bobcats got the second out on a strikeout. Senior
Kaylin Flukey drew an RBI walk and Haywood would score on a passed ball for the 2-0 lead.
The Gaels struck again in the third inning as sophomore
Brooke Acker reached on base one-out walk. Sheeran stepped to the plate next and delivered a two-run home run over the left field fence to double up the lead.
Iona tacked on one more run in the fourth as freshman
Madison Campeau recorded a two-out walk and stole second base. Capuano drove her in on an RBI single to right field for the 5-0 advantage.
The scoring continued in the fifth for the Maroon & Gold, working the bases loaded on three walks with one out. Sophomore
Alivia Lichtner lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Acker to score, and an errant throw allowed sophomore
Hailey Guerrero to score from second for the second run of the inning.
Quinnipiac capped the scoring with an RBI ground out to short in the bottom of the seventh to bring the final to 7-1.
Rieb pitched all seven innings for the complete game, allowing just one run on six hits with one walk while striking out four.
GAME TWO: IONA 7, QUINNIPIAC 6
The Gaels got rolling early in game two as Haywood picked up a one-out single to start the top of the first. Acker then walked to put two runners on for Sheeran who delivered an RBI single through the left side for the 1-0 lead.
Iona offense continued to click in the second inning as Lichtner led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Freshman
Leah Palmer earned a walk and Campeau reached on an error to load the bases. Capuano dropped a bunt single to score the first run of the inning. Haywood added the second run with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field. Acker cleared the bases with a two-run RBI single to left field to give the Gaels the 5-0 lead.
Quinnipiac responded in the bottom half of the inning on two-out RBI single to right center and a first and third steal to cut the deficit to three. A run in the bottom of the third by the home team on a two-out RBI double brought the score to 5-3.
The Bobcats continued to carry the momentum over to fourth inning capitalizing on five hits and an Iona error to score three runs and take a 6-5 lead.
After a scoreless fifth frame, Campeau led off the sixth with a walk. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Capuano. Haywood then lined a single to right field and swiped second to give Iona runners in scoring position. Acker earned her third walk of the game to load the bases. Sheeran stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run double to center field for the 7-6 lead.
Quinnipiac looked to rally in the sixth with a pair of runners on first and second to start the inning. Rieb shut the door getting a line out and two fly outs to end the frame. She pitched a one-two-three bottom of the seventh to secure the 7-6 win.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Iona secured it's third series win to start MAAC play and goes for a second series sweep tomorrow afternoon.
- Sheeran has recorded a hit in 10 straight contests. She has drove in seven runs in the last five games. Her two-run shot in game one was her second home run of the season.
- Haywood has registered two hits in each of the last four games.
- Rieb earned her fifth straight decision in the circle for the Gaels. Today she pitched 10 innings, giving up just one run on seven hits.
