Men's V4 Wins Gold at National Invitational Rowing Championships

WORCESTER, MA - The Iona University men's rowing team entered two boats into the 2024 National Invitational Rowing Championships held on Lake Quinsigamond. Making their debut at the event, the Gaels' varsity four boat secured gold in the grand final, while the program's varsity eight boat participated in the petite final.

MEN'S VARSITY FOUR

Iona's varsity four boat took first place in both the heat stage and in the grand finale. In the morning heats, the Maroon & Gold finished four seconds ahead of second place University of Rochester and posted the top time among the eight boats in the two heats. The Gaels also finished ahead of Williams (+13.36) and New Hampshire (+17.16).
 
Iona topped Rochester again in the finale to take gold posting a time of 7:10.51. The Yellowjackets took silver just over three seconds behind the Gaels. MIT (+16.71), New Hampshire (+17.73), Bates (+30.31), Rochester's second boat (+30.54), Conn College (+55.20) rounded out the finishers in the final.
 
The Gaels' championship boat consisted of senior coxswain Hayden Skigen, graduate Sergey Karpov, senior Zachary Morocho and freshmen Henry Demers and Alejandro Maya.

MEN'S VARSITY EIGHT

The varsity eight crew posted a 6:18.11 in the heat stage of the championship, good for fourth place and a berth into the petite final. Wesleyan (-12.12), Bates, Hobart finished ahead of the Gaels with the latter two advancing to the grand finale.
 
In Iona's final event, the squad finished fourth in a hotly contested six-boat race which saw first and sixth separated by just over nine seconds and the top three inside of a second. With its time of 6:16.61, Iona was six seconds behind race winner Colby College. Hobart and the Coast Guard Academy finished second and third.
 
Freshman Johanna Moran coxed, junior Ethan Megal, sophomore Andrew Catinella, junior Finn Bolger, sophomore Abraham Ocampo, junior Daniel Vanadia, seniors Thomas Koetzner and Oliver Sanchez and sophomore Jack Allen.

In three weeks the Gaels take on the 2024 IRA National Championships on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, NJ for the final event of their 2023-24 campaign.
