NEW ROCHELLE, NY— The Iona University women's soccer team fell to UMBC, 1-0, in a non-conference contest at Mazzella Field on Sunday. The Gaels and Retrievers were scoreless in a defensive battle for the first half, the sole goal of the contest came in the 50
th minute by the visitors.
GAME SUMMARY
It was a defensive battle in the first 45 minutes of play as the Retrievers held a 4-2 shot advantage for the period. Freshman
Kayla Kalbaugh made one save in the opening half for the Gaels. Sophomore
Marissa Graziano recorded two shots on goal off a free kick.
Iona looked to get going in the opening minutes of the second half with two shots just outside the box getting blocked by the UMBC back line. The Retrievers broke the momentum on a long through ball found Izzy Binko in stride past the Gaels defense. She took three dribbles and fired the left footed shot into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
UMBC looked to keep the momentum going, firing four shots in the next eight minutes with two wide-open chances denied by sophomore
Savannah Rogers. The Gaels looked to net the equalizer as the game reached the late stages. Sophomore
Victoria Ryan had a look from just outside the box get turned aside by Amara Codd in the 77
th minute. Sophomore
Payton Foster had a sweeping shot to the right post get stopped in the 84
th minute. In one final flurry for the Gaels in the 87
th minute, three shots inside the box were knocked down by the UMBC defense to preserve the 1-0 score.
Rogers made five saves in the second half for the Gaels. Freshman
Dolene Smith led the team with four shot attempts.
TEAM STATS
- UMBC out shot Iona, 15-12 for the contest. The Gaels were limited to just four shots on goal while the Retrievers recorded seven.
- Iona held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks with five corners coming in the second half.
