Iona WSOC Shines on Senior Day

NEW ROCHELLE, NY—The Iona University women's soccer team defeated Delaware State University, 6-0 on Wednesday afternoon. It was a total team effort for the Gaels over the Hornets on Senior Day at Mazzella Field with five goal scorers and three more players contributing assists in the win.

Prior to the match, the Gaels honored seven seniors in the class of 2025: Caroline Scott, Myla Rodrigues, Niki Kassimatis, Kedarjah Lewis, Katie Menard, Sofia Banegas and Beth Arnold.

The Gaels were led by sophomore Marissa Graziano, who scored two goals in the first half to set the tone. Junior Krystal Haertter tallied her second goal of the season. Kassimatis recorded her first goal and assist in the win. Scott and sophomore Kelsey Landers also registered their first career goal.

GAME SUMMARY

The first half started with a handful of great attacks from the Gaels led by Arnold who started the game at forward, including forcing an own goal that was called back on an offside flag from the referee. Eventually the pressure in the Hornets zone got to be too much, as Iona earned a free kick on of a handball just outside the box in the 37th minute. Graziano chose power as she curled the shot from 25-yards out through the hands of the keeper and in the top left corner.  Not even two minutes later, Graziano stepped up again on the free kick. This time chose pin-point accuracy as she brilliantly placed the ball in the far-right corner of the goal out of everyone's reach for the 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

Coming out of the break, Arnold stepped into goal for Scott who recorded a save in the opening half. The Gaels proceeded to push the attack in the last second half, as Landers, Haertter, Scott and Kassimatis all found the back of the net in the final 25 minutes of play. Senior Katie Menard, Sophomore Victoria Ryan, Sophomore Morgan Lopez, and Kassimatis all contributed their first career assists in second half. A moment that will forever be remembered in the 79th minute for the Maroon & Gold, as Scott who's made 47 saves in her four-year career as a goalkeeper was in the right place at the right time to score her first career goal on a rebound shot bouncing off the right post.

Iona recorded the team's highest scoring victory since August 25, 2022, a 5-0 victory at Delaware State. The game also goes into the program record books as the second highest scoring game behind a 7-0 win over Saint Peter's in 2014. It is also the second highest point scoring game with 16 points, just behind the win over the Peacocks. The Gaels set a program record for most shots in a game with 35, beating out the previous mark of 34 set against NJIT in 2014.
