Iona Swimmers Close Out Regular Season With 2 Wins at Manhattan

RIVERDALE NY - The Iona University Swimming and Diving Team closed out their regular season on a high note, sweeping Manhattan University on the road today. The meet held at Manhattan's home pool at the Horace Mann School, saw the men cruise to a 133-113 win, as the women posted a 130-81 total.

The pair of wins raises the men's record to 6 wins and 3 defeats, with the women standing now at 6 wins and four defeats.

Both teams controlled the meet from the start taking the opening 200-yard Medley relays. The Women's quartet of Allison Mullin, Hailey Baker, Ashley Benkert and Megan Josephs posted 1;52.07 time, seven seconds ahead of Manhattan. The Iona men's foursome of Michael Faughnan, Matthew Loftus, Brian Baldwin and Nick Patino touched first at 1:36.23, 1.7 seconds ahead of Manhattan.

The 1,000-yard Freestyle saw Kate Kennedy win at 11:06.27 as on the men's side, Junior JP Maroney posted his first collegiate win at 10:47.63.

The 200-Free had Raegan O'Brien and Nate Wales win their events with respective times of 2:00.14 and 1:47.71.

The 100-backstroke saw freshmen Allison Mullin post her first collegiate win at 1:03.15, with graduate student Michael Faughnan winning the 100-Back at 49.87.

Junior Meeya Yan came from behind for her first collegiate win in the 100-Breaststroke at 1:10.74. The men's race saw the defending MAAC Champion, Joe Brennan hold off a late charge from Nick Patino and Matthew Lofts to win at 58.00.

The 200-yard Butterfly had Erin McKinney and Noah Giunta touch first with respective times of 2:16.81 and 1:57.23. The 50-yard Freestyle saw another Iona sweep as Graduate student Megan Josephs won at 25.34 and Kieran Egan led a 1-2-3 Iona sweep with a 21.22 clocking. The 100-yard Freestyle had Kate Kennedy win at 55.12 with sophomore elijah Decasseres taking his first 100-Free race twin of his career at 48.67.

Mary Grace Waring (2:16.01) and Andrew Diano (2:02.06) claimed the 200-yard Backstroke events as Hailey Baker (2:29.67) and first-time winner Ajdin Methoxha (2:23.86) winning their respective 200-yard Breaststroke events.

Freshmen Mollie Sarnes (5:29.51) won for the first time at Iona with Colin Martin doing the same at 5:07/87 in the 500-Freestyle.

Graduate student Julia Moser claimed the top stop in the 100-Butterfly at 59.62, with Mikel Palaj doing the same in the men's event at 52.50.

The meet's final event saw O'Brien win at 1:01.79 in the 100-Individual Medley as did Freshmen Nick Patino at 55.10.

Iona closed out the meet with the Women's 200-Freestyle Relay quartet of Josephs, Morgan Yuengling, Benkert and Moser touching first at 1:40.67. The men's team of Faughnan, Liam Pyatt, Matthew Loftis and Egan touched first at 1:25.18.

"This was a solid meet for our group and a chance to put people in a position to work on racing events that will help us come championships in 19 days," commented Coach Nick Cavataro.
