EMMITSBURG, MD — The Iona University women's soccer team continued its unbeaten stretch with a 1-0 road victory at Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium. The Gaels utilized a first half goal from sophomore
Dolene Smith over the Mountaineers to improve to 3-0-1 in its last four Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games.
Smith tallied her sixth goal of the season in the opening half and the second game winning goal on the year. Senior
Zaheira Hegazi dished out her first collegiate assist on the game winning goal. Sophomore
Kayla Kalbaugh made a season-high five saves in goal for the shut-out victory.
GAME SUMMARY
Mount looked to attack early off the opening kick with two corner kicks attempts in the first minute of action. The Gaels held strong to prevent any shots on target.
From there, Iona went to work in the attacking third, holding a 7-1 margin on shots over the next 27 minutes of action. Abigail Makela held the offense at bay with four stops for the Mountaineers.
Kalbaugh made her first save for the Maroon & Gold later in the opening half with a punch out stop in the 31
st minute. Mount had one last first half flurry in the 36
th minute with three shot attempts consecutively but Iona's defense held firm.
The Gaels quickly worked the ball out on the attacking third from there as Hegazi dribbled down the left side and fired a centering cross to a wide-open Smith to bury the one-timer to the top right-hand corner off the goal for the 1-0 advantage in the 39
th minute.
Iona looked to carry momentum over off the second half kick-off firing two shots on goal in the first nine minute of gameplay in the restart.
From there, it was Mount controlling the pace as the home team looked for the equalizer. The Mountaineers held a 6-3 advantage on shots in the final 30 minutes of action.
Kalbaugh was there to deliver for the Maroon & Gold with four second half stops in the 59

th minute to preserve the big road conference win.

- Iona led in shot attempts over its opponent for the sixth straight game, tying its season-high with 18 shots while Mount attempted 13 shots. The Gaels rifled nine shots on goal while the Mountaineers attempted five total.
- The Gaels tallied eight corner kicks and held Mount to just four attempts.
- The league tilt saw 14 fouls called and just one yellow card handed out to Iona.
