Iona Men's Water Polo Downs Conn College, 19-10

NEW LONDON, CT – Leading the entire contest, the Iona University men's water polo team notched its seventh season win with a 19-10 road victory over Connecticut College in a non-conference match here this evening.

Sophomore Pavle Musikic led the Maroon and Gold with five goals on 11 shots, while graduate student Luka Nastic had three goals on four shots. Senior Matthew Mischlich and sophomore Daniel Raz scored two goals each. Junior Zachary McAllister-Sim, sophomore Brett Grady, sophomore Ryan Tannus, freshman Kale Arena, freshman Colin Minehan, Jakob Villasenor and Samson Williams scored one goal apiece. The Gaels scored 19 goals on 37 shots on 11 assists with three from senior Rastko Jevdjovic and two from Mischlich.

In goal in the first and third quarters, senior Aleksandar Slavkovic had four saves on 12 Camels shots, five goals against, three steals and one assist. In the second and fourth quarters, sophomore P.J. Bartzen had ten saves on 14 Camels shots, five goals against and one assist.

On defense, Iona blocked three shots. The Gaels made ten steals with three by Jevdjovic. Iona drew six Connecticut kickouts, while being ejected six times including four five-meter penalties.
The Gaels turned the ball over 11 times. Grady won two of four swim offs. Iona scored one goal on six man-up chances, while Connecticut had two man-up goals on six chances.

Musikic's first two goals gave Iona a 3-0 edge with 4:40 gone in the match. After Tannus scored, a Connecticut five-meter penalty goal cut the visitors edge back to two 4-2 with 1:41 remaining in the first quarter. On a Slavkovic assist, Raz restored a three-goal lead 5-2 with 13 ticks left.

The Gaels continued a 4-0 run into the second quarter with goals from Mischlich, Nastic and Musikic to go up six 7-1 with 6:03 to go. The Camels responded with a 3-0 run of their own to slice the Gaels advantage back to three 7-4 at the 3:50 mark. In the final 2:01, Arena and Villasenor gave Iona a five-goal 9-4 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter, Musikic and Mischlich increased the Iona lead to seven 11-4, but a Connecticut man-up score chopped that edge back to six 11-5 with 4:32 on the clock. Following McAllister-Sim's first Iona goal, two straight home scores, including a five-meter penalty score got the Camels back within five 12-7 with 2:57 left. Following another Connecticut five-meter penalty goal, Iona took off on a 3-0 run with two Nastic scores and Grady's full-tank open-net missile with two ticks left for a 16-8 margin going into the final period.

Assisted by Bartzen, Raz opened the final quarter with his second goal followed by two consecutive Camels scores as Iona led 17-10 with 5:02 left in regulation. In the closing 3:11, Williams and Minehan gave the Gaels a nine-goal edge, their largest of the match, to seal the win.

UP NEXT

This weekend the Gaels remain on the road with two Northeast Water Polo Conference matches. On Saturday, Iona faces Princeton at 3 p.m., and on Sunday at noon takes on Long Island University in Brooklyn.
