POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Iona University volleyball team faced the against the Marist Red Foxes to close out their weekend road trip. In a tough battle in all three sets, the Gaels were unable to get the push needed as they fell in three sets.Â
THE RUNDOWN: Marist: 3, iona: 0
SET 1: Freshman
Emma Koceja opened the scoring with a kill, followed by an attack error that gave the Gaels a two-point lead. Marist answered with three straight points. After the Maroon and Gold tied the score at three, the Red Foxes went on a seven-point run that forced Iona to call an early timeout. The Gaels responded with four unanswered to cut the deficit to three, but Marist countered with another three-point stretch to extend their lead to six. The set remained close until a late five-point run gave the Red Foxes an eight-point cushion. Despite a late push from Iona, Marist held on to take the first set 25-23.
SET 2:Â The Maroon and Gold opened the set with three unanswered points, each coming from a different player. Iona maintained the early advantage until Marist tied the score at seven following an attack error. The Gaels quickly regained control after a kill from sophomore
Taylor Timko and a Marist error. The Red Foxes took their first lead of the set after an Iona attack error, but three straight points capped by a Koceja kill gave the Gaels a two-point edge. The rest of the set was tightly contested, with both teams trading points and leads until Marist scored three straight to win 26-24.
SET 3: Koceja once again started the scoring with a kill. Marist responded with a 4-1 run to take an early three-point lead, but Iona answered with six straight points to go up by three. The lead stayed within single digits until a 4-1 run pushed the Gaels ahead by five. Marist answered with a 6-0 stretch to reclaim the lead for the first time since 5-4. Iona briefly went back in front after three unanswered points, but the Red Foxes closed strong with a 4-1 run and sealed the match with a 26-24 victory.
IONA Performers
- Timko led the attack for the Gaels with 10 kills.Â
- Senior Caleigh Schroeder had a double-double as she led the team in digs with 18 digs and assists with 27.Â
- Junior Buse Tinaz led the team in blocks with 5.Â
THE OPPONENT
- Mallory Reck led the team in kills with 16.Â
- Claire Lewis led the team in assists with 19.
- Cecilia Potter-Pessoa had double digit kills with 11.Â
