Iona University Athletics mourns the passing of Edward F. Arrigoni '56, '91H, a devoted alumnus, transformational benefactor, and lifelong supporter of Gael student-athletes, who passed away on September 29 at the age of 91.
A Bronx native and proud Iona graduate, Edward's life was defined by vision, generosity, and faith. After earning his degree in 1956, he went on to pioneer New York City's private transportation industry, founding New York Bus Service and creating the city's first express bus routes between the Bronx and Midtown Manhattan. His leadership not only reshaped transportation for countless commuters but also reflected his lifelong commitment to improving the lives of others.
That same commitment guided his extraordinary support of his alma mater. Edward's name and legacy are woven throughout the Iona campus and most especially within Athletics. His generosity helped build and sustain the facilities and programs that have shaped the experiences of generations of Gael student-athletes. From the plaque outside the Hynes Athletics Center arena to other areas that bear his name, his devotion is forever part of the fabric of Iona Athletics.
Mr. Arrigoni also served as a trusted mentor to senior leaders in the Athletics Department for several decades. Always available to lend an ear, share a story, or offer advice, he cared deeply about the success of Iona Athletics and, in particular, its basketball programs. His counsel and encouragement were invaluable in moments big and small, and his passion for Gael Athletics was evident in every conversation.
"Edward Arrigoni's name is synonymous with Iona Athletics," said Matt Glovaski, Director of Athletics. "His support was not only visible through the facilities and initiatives he made possible, but also in the countless lives he touched. He cared deeply for our student-athletes and remained engaged with our programs throughout his life. Edward's legacy will live on as an inspiration for all of Gael Nation."
Even when health concerns prevented him from visiting in recent years, Edward remained a constant presence from afar, checking in, sharing encouragement, and continuing to support Iona Athletics. His impact extended well beyond his philanthropy. He embodied the values of dedication, faith, and perseverance that define what it means to be a Gael.
Iona Athletics extends its deepest sympathies to the Arrigoni family and all who were blessed by his life. His generosity, leadership, and devotion to Gael student-athletes will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire the next generation of Gaels.
