Iona MBB Falls to Quinnpiac in MAAC Opener

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona University men's basketball team dropped its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener to Quinnipiac, 89-68, Friday evening at the Hynes Center. Senior Lamin Sabally delivered a career-best 27 points and secured his third double-double of the season with 14 rebounds to pace the Gaels. The Bobcats used a decisive surge early in the second half to pull away and secure the road win.

THE RUNDOWN

The opening half featured five lead changes and one tie as Quinnipiac carried a 36-34 edge into the locker room. Iona led by as many as four less than three minutes in after two free throws from junior Kosy Akametu. Quinnipiac pushed ahead by nine with 3:13 remaining before the Gaels closed the half on a 7-0 run to pull within two, narrowly missing a chance to tie on the final possession.
 
After the teams traded baskets on their first two trips of the second half, Quinnipiac delivered the turning point with a 14-4 run to build a 52-40 lead at 16:06. Iona trimmed the deficit to nine near the 12-minute mark but could not inch closer. The Bobcats closed strong, scoring 11 of the final 13 points to create the final margin.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Sabally powered the Gaels with a 27-point, 14-rebound double-double on 10-of-14 shooting, adding two steals and an assist; he reached his double-double by halftime with 16 points and 10 boards.
  • Graduate guards Keshawn Williams and CJ Anthony each tallied 10 points; Williams added five rebounds, while Anthony scored all of his points after halftime and handed out a game-high seven assists.
  • Akametu returned to the lineup after a four-game absence and contributed nine points, five rebounds and four assists.
  • Junior Denver Anglin provided eight points off the bench for the Maroon & Gold.

THE OPPONENT

  • Quinnipiac was led by leading scorer Jaden Zimmerman, who posted 19 points along with six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
  • Five additional Bobcats reached double figures, including Asim Jones and Grant Randall with 13 apiece, and 11-point efforts from Amarri Monroe, Nate Guerengomba and Keith McKnight.
  • Randall secured a double-double with 10 rebounds, while Jones paced the visitors with five assists.

TEAM STATISTICS

  • Quinnipiac outshot Iona 47.9% to 37.5% overall, buoyed by a 22-for-37 (59.5%) performance in the second half.
  • The Bobcats connected on 9-of-26 (34.6%) from deep and limited Iona to 5-of-22 (22.7%), snapping the Gaels' streak of seven straight games with at least eight made threes.
  • The visitors controlled the glass with a 48-35 rebounding advantage, including 18-15 on the offensive boards and 20-17 in second-chance points.
  • Quinnipiac finished with 23 assists against 12 turnovers; Iona posted 15 assists and also committed 12 giveaways.
