NEW BRITAIN, CT — The Iona University softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Central Connecticut State on Friday afternoon. The Gaels recorded an 8-0 win in game one before a late rally in game two for a 7-3 win at CCSU Softball Field.
The Maroon & Gold offense totaled 17 hits in the two games against the Blue Devils. Junior
Brooke Acker led the way with six runs batted in on a 3-for-7 day at the dish. Junior
Hailey Guerrero went 4-for-6 with five runs scored and three runs batted in.

Samantha Rieb twirled a three-hit shutout with a career-high nine strikeouts for the game one win. Sophomore
Allison Hoppe tied her career-high with six strikeouts in game two for her first win as a member of the Maroon & Gold.
GAME ONE: IONA 8, CCSU 0
Offense was slow to get going in the opening game. Junior
Alivia Lichtner led off the third inning with a bunt single. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Brianna Fischer before stealing third base. The Blue Devils got the second out on a strikeout thereafter. Senior
Brianna Bailey broke open the scoring with an RBI single to left field. She then stole second as Guerrero earned a walk. Acker capped the scoring for the inning with a two-run double to centerfield for the 3-0 Iona lead.
The Gaels tacked on one more in the third as rookie
Sara Piña led off the inning with a double and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Lichtner dropped down another bunt for the 4-0 advantage. Guerrero then hit a one-out home run in the fifth inning to continue the scoring.
Rieb held the CCSU offense to just three base runners on two walks and another reached on an error while striking out seven in the first five innings. The Blue Devils finally broke through with a hit with one-out in the bottom of the sixth.
Iona capped the scoring with three more runs in the seventh as Guerrero recorded a two-out RBI single to centerfield and then Acker launched a two-run blast over the left field wall. CCSU threatened with runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the seventh before the Gaels sealed the game on a double play.
GAME TWO: IONA 7, CCSU 3
The Blue Devils struck first in the bottom of the second with a one-out RBI single to left field after the leadoff batter reached on an error. CCSU tacked on a second run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Iona was held to just two hits and stranded four base runners through the first four innings. Lichtner was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth inning. She then advanced to third on a bunt from Fischer. Lichtner broke for home and beat the throw as Fischer advanced to second to score the first Iona run. Bailey then dropped down another bunt to score Fischer to tie the game up. The inning continued as Guerrero doubled to center field. Acker then reached on an error but scored a run on the sacrifice fly. Piña gave Iona a 4-2 lead on an RBI single to left field.
Momentum continued in favor of the Gaels in the sixth with runners on the corners with one out. Guerrero picked up an RBI infield single. Acker followed with an RBI double to left field before Piña capped the Iona scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field.
CCSU struck back with one run in the bottom half of the inning on a one-out RBI double to left field. Hoppe escaped trouble with an inning ending strikeout. The Blue Devils threatened with a lead off single in the bottom of the seventh before Hoppe retired the next three batters for the 7-3 win.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Guerrero extended her hitting streak to five games. She now leads the team with four multi-hit games.
- Acker drove in six runs on the day and now has four multi-RBI games this season.
- Lichtner recorded her first multi-hit game of the season in the opening contest.
- Piña tallied her second multi-RBI contest of the year in game two.
- Rieb bested her previous career-high of seven strikeouts with nine in the first game. It was the fifth shutout performance of her career.
- Hoppe earned her first win in an Iona uniform and her second complete game effort of the year. She tied her career-high of six strikeouts against the Blue Devils.
