BOULDER, CO - The Gaels traveled to mountain time today for a match-up against the Buffalos of Colorado, Iona was held scoreless for the first half, but their defense was strong in the second half as they only allowed one goal. They fell 12-4, falling to 1-6 on the season.
Kira Varada led the team offensively with two goals and one assist on six shots. The other two goals came off the stick of
Kacie Scarduzio and
Calen Norton. Norton joined Varada as the only two Gaels with multiple shots.
Laine Walterson added an assist. Iona only got 13 shots off with 10 of being on goal. The Maroon & Gold allowed 35 Colorado shots and only controlled three of the games 20 draws.
In net for Iona
Lauren Sweeney started, playing the first half allowing 11 goals and making four saves. In the second half
Ava Giugliano allowed a lone goal and made a game high eight saves.
Varada stuffed the stat sheet on the defensive side, she caused five turnovers and picked up five ground balls, both game highs. As a team the Gaels picked up 12 ground balls and caused eight Buffalo turnovers.
Iona returns in a week, and will open MAAC play on the road against Quinnipiac on Mar. 22 at 3 pm.
