Iona Softball Sweeps Tuesday Twinbill at Rider

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ — The Iona University softball team continued its strong start to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Tuesday afternoon, earning a doubleheader sweep at Rider. The Gaels dominated game one with a 10-1 win in six innings before a thrilling 5-4 extra innings victory in game two at Herb and Joan Young Field.

The Maroon & Gold move to 7-1 in conference action. Iona registered 20 hits in the two contests against the Broncs. Senior Kenadie Gonzalez and junior Brooke Acker both recorded their fourth home runs of the season in game one. Acker posted a team-high four runs batted in for the day including the go-ahead RBI double in the 10th inning of game one.

Senior Samantha Rieb recorded the game one win, surrendering just one unearned run across six hits. She fanned five batters and did not yield a walk. First-year right hander Nadia Andarowski earned her first career win in game two, pitching the final two and two thirds in relief for Iona.

GAME ONE: IONA 10, RIDER 1 (6 Inn.)

Iona got started early as junior Hannah Werth led off the game with a single to leftfield. Junior Hailey Guerrero then earned a one-out walk before both runners moved into scoring position. A fielding error brought home the first run for the Maroon & Gold. With runners on first and third, a throw down to second allowed Guerrero to steal home for the 2-0 advantage.

The Gaels then loaded the bases in the second with one out. Guerrero roped a double to the center field to score two runs. Acker followed that up with a two-run double to right field for the 6-0 lead.

Rider got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning with a one-out RBI single to right field.

Iona kept things rolling in the third as Gonzalez led off the frame with a home run to right field. Back-to-back doubles to Werth and junior Alivia Lichtner put runners on second and third with one out. Junior Brianna Fischer dropped down an RBI bunt to bring the score to 8-1.

Acker picked up another leadoff solo shot for Iona with a home run to left field in the top of the sixth. Iona scored the final run of the game on an error on a fly ball by rookie Caelin Kosvitch that allowed Gonzalez to score all the way from first base to bring the score to 10-1.

GAME TWO: IONA 5, RIDER 4 (10 Inn.)

Iona picked right back up in the top of the second inning of game two as Acker led off the frame with a double to right field. Senior Brianna Bailey followed that up with a single to right field as Acker advanced to third on the play. First-year Sara Piña lined an RBI single off the pitcher for the 1-0 Iona lead. After a sacrifice bunt, Kosvitch lined a two-RBI single into left field to give the Gaels a 3-0 advantage.

The Gaels added to the run total in the fourth inning as Lichtner launched a two-out home run to right field to push the lead to four.

Rider chipped away at the deficit in the fifth inning on a one-out two-run home run to left field. The Broncs used another two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game up at 4-4. The home team looked to tack on more runs in the sixth with runners on second and third and one out, but the Gaels escaped trouble with a fielder's choice at the plate and a lineout to centerfield.

After a scoreless seventh, the Broncs threatened to steal the walk-off victory with runners on first and second with one-out. A deep flyball bounced off the wall as both base runners froze. The Gaels worked quickly nabbing the lead runner on the relay throw before a rundown at third to push the game to the ninth inning.

The game rolled on into the 10th inning as sunset neared. Fischer recorded the first hit since the fourth inning for Iona with a one-out ground-rule double in the 10th. After a ground out for the second out, Acker stepped to the plate and dropped a double into right field to score Fischer and take back the 5-4 lead.

As Rider looked for one final rally, Andarowski shut the door by retiring the side to secure the extra innings win.
