Iona WLAX Downs Rider 15-7 In Program's First MAAC Playoff Win

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Iona University women's lacrosse earned its first-ever MAAC playoff victory, defeating Rider 15-7 to advance to the semifinals of the 2025 MAAC Championships. Head coach Lauren Kahn made history as the first Iona coach to win a playoff game in program history.

Kira Varada delivered a historic performance, leading the Gaels in nearly every statistical category. She tallied a game-high seven points, scoring five goals and adding two assists, while also recording seven draw controls, six ground balls, and six caused turnovers. Senior Kacie Scarduzio matched Varada with seven points of her own, registering five assists and two goals.

Freshman Jocelyn Smith continued her strong postseason form, netting three goals and dishing out one assist. Smith now has five goals and six points over her last two games. Calen Norton added two goals, while Kate Kreuger, Lindsey Grove, and Alyssa Castellano each scored once.

Despite both teams firing off 27 shots, Iona was more efficient, placing six more shots on goal than the Broncs. The Gaels capitalized on three of their seven free-position attempts, while limiting Rider to four free-position goals.

In goal, redshirt freshman Ava Giugliano was outstanding, making 10 saves and helping hold the Broncs to single digits. She also contributed three ground balls, tied for second-most on the team alongside Carly Linthicum. Overall, Iona collected 16 ground balls, caused 13 turnovers, and won 12 draw controls, with Kreuger adding four draw controls of her own.

The Gaels now turn their attention to top-seeded Mount St. Mary's, whom they will face in the semifinals on Friday, May 2, at noon. Mount St. Mary's will host the final three games of the 2025 MAAC Championship. Following Iona's semifinal matchup, No. 2 Fairfield will take on No. 3 Siena. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday, May 4, at 11 a.m.
