Iona Softball Drops Regular Season Finale at Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The Iona University softball team dropped the series finale to Marist, 6-2 on Friday afternoon at Gartland Field. The Gaels finish the regular season 28-19 overall and won a program best 18 conference games and finished the year with a 18-8 record in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.

Rookies Caelin Kosvitch and Sara Piña tallied the lone Iona hits. Kosvitch also drove in the two Maroon & Gold runs with a two-RBI double in the fifth inning.

GAME SUMMARY

The Red Foxes attacked early on their Senior Day, utilizing a leadoff home run and a three-run shot in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. Marist added two more runs in the second on a two-out two run home run to jump ahead 6-0.

Iona was held to just one base runner, a first inning walk to junior Hannah Werth in the first four frames. The Gaels offense kicked up in the fifth as junior Brooke Acker and senior Destiny Nardello opened the inning with back-to-back walks. A sacrifice bunt from junior Alivia Lichtner advanced both runners over. Kosvitch stepped to the plate and lined a two-run double down the left field line to get the Iona on the scoreboard. The Gaels looked to tack on more with runners on second and third with two outs but Marist escaped trouble with an inning ending ground out.

Piña added her base knock in the sixth inning, but the Gaels bats stayed quiet as Marist sealed the 6-2 win for the series sweep.

Sophomore Allison Hoppe pitched the first inning and two thirds for the Gaels. Rookie Nadia Andarowski pitched the final four and a third innings of scoreless relief, scattering five hits.
