Iona WSOC Falls in Midweek Tilt Against Manhattan

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University women's soccer team fell to local rival Manhattan, 2-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Wednesday afternoon. The Jaspers pulled ahead with an opening half goal and withstood a Gaels comeback bid and iced the game with a late goal to take the rivalry matchup at Mazzella Field.

GAME SUMMARY

Manhattan dictated the pace off the opening kick, working in the attacking third early in the contest. The Jaspers drew the first corner kick of the game in the 11th minute to work a set play. A right-side corner kick from Amaya Hill was played low into the box for Kaylee Stowell to weave through traffic and bury the go-ahead goal for the 1-0 lead.

The Maroon & Gold offense was stifled by the Jaspers defense through the first half. The Gaels offense didn't fire a shot on goal until the 28th minute as senior Zaheira Hegazi fired a shot from eight yards out that was denied by Margaret Brunk. Offense slowed from there as the opening stanza ticked down.

Iona kicked up the intensity in the attacking third out of the halftime break firing three shots to just one by the visitors. Senior Sofia Banegas had a look from 20 yards away that was stopped by Brunk. Manhattan quickly countered in the following minute but sophomore Kayla Kalbaugh made the diving save towards the left post for Iona.

The Gaels had one more look on goal in the 67th minute as rookie Mya Jackson charged down the right side and fired a shot to the near post, but Brunk once again was there for the save.

Manhattan capitalized on an errant pass off a free kick in the 70th minute that led to a breakaway attempt. With a numbers advantage Maya Wheeler played a long pass to Hill as the Jaspers had a two-on one breakaway Josslyn Weismann took the pass and dribbled into the box and fired home a left footed shot for the 2-0 lead.  Iona continued to fight looking to get on the scoreboard, but the final three shot attempts were denied by the Manhattan defense.

Rookie Ava Barker led Iona with two shot attempts for the game and Kalbaugh made two second half saves in goal. Hill paced the Jaspers with a two-assist game and Brunk stopped three shots in goal.
