POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The Iona University women's soccer team kicked off Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a 1-1 draw at Marist. Sophomore
Dolene Smith put the Gaels out in front with a goal in the 41
st minute before the Red Foxes knotted the game with 95 seconds left in the contest at Tenney Stadium.
Saturday night was the third consecutive 1-1 draw in the annual series between the two conference foes. Smith scored her first goal of the season and the second of her collegiate career with the first-half header. Junior
Marissa Graziano registered the assist, her first of the season and seventh of her career. Junior
Savannah Rogers tallied four saves in goal for the Maroon & Gold.
GAME SUMMARY
The Gaels looked to take advantage of an errant Marist pass just three minutes into the game as rookie
Alli Little picked up the steal. She dribbled in and fired a shot towards the right side but was denied by a diving save from Red Foxes keeper Maddy Catalanotti.
Iona controlled the pace from there, taking two corner kick attempts over the next 10 minutes of play. Marist attempted its first shot in the 17
th minute with a shot that just went over the crossbar. Shortly thereafter junior
Savannah Rogers made her first save on a booming shot attempt from 30-yards out.
The physicality of the game wore on with both sides being limited on scoring chances as the half ticked down. Iona took advantage on its 11
th free kick of the opening half as Graziano set up to take the kick just inside the Marist zone at midfield in the 41
st minute. Her booming kick bounced straight in the air off an attempted header clear by the Red Foxes. Smith was there to collect the rebound with a header past a charging Catalanotti for the 1-0 advantage.
Marist held a 5-3 advantage on shots in the first 45 minutes of play. While the Gaels led with three corner kicks.
The Red Foxes controlled the tempo in the second stanza as Iona spent majority of the half in the defensive end. Marist attempted six shots though the first 35 minutes of the half. Rogers made two big time saves, the first coming on a tip over the crossbar in the 68
th minute off a corner attempt. Another stop came in the 80
th minute as the home team charged into the Iona end.
With 95 seconds to go in the game, Marist through one final a desperation shot from just outside the 18-yard box by Jiji Sweiss. The right footed shot curved past the diving Rogers and into the right hand corner of the net to tie the game up at 1-1. The Gaels looked for one last chance to reclaim the lead but time expired as both teams walked away with a point in the league opener.
TEAM STATS
- For the game, Marist held a 12-3 advantage on shots and a 5-2 margin for shots on goal. Iona was held without a shot attempt in the final 45 minutes.
- The Red Foxes also led on corner kicks 5-3 with four corner kicks coming in the second half.
- With the stakes raised for league play, 26 fouls were called on the night.
