THE RUNDOWN
Iona got off to a slow offensive start and Canisius capitalized early, opening a 13-6 lead through the first seven and a half minutes. The Gaels responded with the first of three double-digit runs, scoring 14 straight points over a four-minute stretch to flip the margin to 20-13 with just over eight minutes remaining. Canisius briefly cut the deficit to two with a 5-0 spurt less than a minute later but would not draw any closer. Iona carried a 30-25 lead into halftime.
Â
The Gaels again needed time to find rhythm in the second half, allowing seven straight Canisius points as the visitors took a 32-30 lead at the 17:13 mark. Sabally tied the game on the ensuing possession, igniting a decisive stretch for the Maroon & Gold. Two trips later, Anglin buried a three-pointer to give Iona the lead for good. Defined as runs of 10 or more consecutive points, Iona delivered 19-0 and 12-0 "kill-shots" that surrounded just five Canisius points, accounting for a dominant 31-5 run over a 10-and-a-half-minute span. During that stretch, the Gaels shot 12-for-16 from the field with six three-pointers, committed no turnovers, and limited Canisius to 2-for-17 shooting with two giveaways. Iona led 61-37 with 6:34 to play. Sabally's layup at the 3:44 mark pushed the margin to 67-41, and the Gaels matched their largest lead of 29 on two occasions, the last coming on sophomore
Khalil Badru's runner in the paint with just under two minutes remaining.
