Iona Announces Hiring of Gemma Alexander-Mozeak as Assistant Men's and Women's Tennis Coach

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Iona University head men's and women's tennis coach Katia Bogomolova has announced the hiring of Gemma Alexander-Mozeak as assistant coach for both programs.

Alexander-Mozeak brings decades of experience at the NCAA Division I, Division III, and community development levels, with an extensive background in coaching, player development, recruiting, and program building. She has previously served as a head coach at St. John's University, York College (CUNY), Fordham University, and Hunter College, while also holding leadership roles with the United States Tennis Association Eastern Section and New York Junior Tennis and Learning.

"I am thrilled to welcome Gemma to the Iona tennis family," Bogomolova said. "Her experience across collegiate tennis, her commitment to student-athlete development, and her passion for growing the game align perfectly with our program's values. She brings a wealth of knowledge and mentorship that will immediately benefit both our incoming men's and women's teams."

Alexander-Mozeak enjoyed two successful stints as head coach at St. John's University (2003-05, 2008-12), where she guided the Red Storm to multiple top conference finishes and helped earn the program's first national ITA ranking, reaching No. 72 in March 2004. Across her six seasons at St. John's, she compiled 57 career victories and recorded double-digit win totals in five seasons, including a program-best 13 wins in 2004-05.

In 2019, Alexander-Mozeak was named head women's tennis coach at York College, continuing her strong track record of leadership within the CUNY system. Her collegiate coaching résumé also includes a two-year tenure at Fordham University, where her teams posted a combined 25-9 record.

From 1991-2001, Alexander-Mozeak also served as the proprietor of Gem Enterprise, an organization focused on sports event production, where she planned and operated tennis and basketball tournaments, clinics, camps, and fundraisers while creating networking opportunities between participants, community leaders, and entrepreneurs.

Beyond college tennis, Alexander-Mozeak has played a significant role in youth development and community engagement. She has served as a Metro Regional Director and Community Outreach Specialist for USTA Eastern, a Tennis Program Specialist with the Harlem Children's Zone, and currently works in program leadership roles with afterschool and educational initiatives across New York City. She has served as a board member of both USTA Eastern and the American Tennis Association.

A standout student-athlete in her own right, Alexander-Mozeak was a conference champion in singles and doubles at St. John's, a team captain, Most Valuable Player, and an All-Academic Team selection. She also achieved a Top 75 national ranking in NCAA Division I women's doubles during her collegiate career.

Alexander-Mozeak holds a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in Theology and Government/Politics from St. John's University.

"I am excited to join Iona University and work alongside Coach Bogomolova," Alexander-Mozeak said. "I look forward to supporting our student-athletes on and off the court and contributing to the growth and success of both programs."

Iona University announced the reinstatement of its men's and women's tennis programs in August 2025 and its return to competition during the 2026-27 school year.
