Iona Swim & Dive Sweep Rider Behind 21 First Place Finishes

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Behind a combined 21 first-place finishes, the Iona University men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept visiting Rider University on Saturday at Hynes Athletics Center.

The Maroon and Gold men earned a 183-117 victory, while the women claimed a 175-119 win. The victory marked the men's first of the season, improving their record to 1-1, while the women moved to 2-0.


Reflecting on the team's performance, head coach Nick Cavataro said, "The team was very focused to race at Hynes today and responded well to the METRO opponent here for the first time since 2006."


The two programs last met in 2025 in Lawrenceville, N.J., where the Rider men won by 57 points and the Iona women prevailed by 63.


RELAY SUCCESS:

Iona captured all four relay events on the afternoon.
The women's 200-yard medley relay team of Raegan O'Brien, Francesca Fields, Victoria Mordaunt and Julia Sherrill finished in 1:47.18, defeating Rider by 2.59 seconds. The men's quartet of Kieran Egan, Max Buchen, Wyatt Julia and Nick Patino led from start to finish, winning a close race by 0.62 seconds with a time of 1:32.55.
In the 400-yard relays, Sherrill, Mary Grace Waring, Mordaunt and Kate Kennedy clocked a 3:37.31 to win by 5.81 seconds. On the men's side, Harry Platt, Nate Wales, James Gonzalez and Egan recorded a time of 3:06.85, the fastest mark in the METRO this season, to secure a 3.74-second victory.

WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS:

Women's co-captain Raegan O'Brien led the Gaels with three individual victories in addition to her opening leg on the winning medley relay. O'Brien won the 100-yard backstroke in 58.52, the 200-yard backstroke in 2:05.94 and the 200-yard individual medley in 2:13.06.
Victoria Mordaunt claimed first place in both the 50-yard freestyle (24.87) and the 100-yard butterfly (57.93).
Freshman Francesca DeNucci continued her strong start to the season, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:59.93 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:17.16 for the second consecutive week.
Senior Kate Kennedy won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.95, while Julia Sherrill took first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.87.

MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS:

Senior Harry Platt led the men's team with three individual victories, sweeping the 100-yard, 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events in 46.74, 1:41.75 and 4:51.25, respectively.
Co-captain Kieran Egan won both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events, recording times of 51.01 and 1:52.20.
Junior Max Buchen captured the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.10 and the 200-yard individual medley in 1:59.97.
Senior Nick Patino claimed the 50-yard freestyle in 20.97, while freshman Danny Lezi earned his first collegiate victory in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:09.40, finishing 0.90 seconds ahead of teammate Buchen.

UP NEXT:

The Gaels return to action next weekend when they host Sacred Heart University and Wagner College for a Homecoming tri-meet at Hynes Athletics Center. The diving events are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 16, with swimming competition set for Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
