Iona WSOC Falls in Road Matchup to Miami, 3-1

CORAL GABLES, FL — The Iona University women's soccer team concluded its non-conference slate on Sunday afternoon, with a 3-1 setback to Miami at Cobb Stadium. The Gaels worked to level the contest early in the second half before the Hurricanes tallied two unanswered goals to take the matchup.

Rookie Natalia Arango recorded her third goal of the season for Iona. Senior Savannah Rogers made one first half save while junior Kayla Kalbaugh recorded five second half stops.

GAME SUMMARY

Pace was controlled between the two sides to start as both recorded one shot on goal in the opening 11 minutes of play. Rogers made her lone save of the game in the 10th minute for Iona before graduate student Zaheria Hegazi rifled a shot from 25-yards out a minute later that was denied.

The tempo was slow from there as the Hurricanes held a 3-0 margin on shot attempts over the next 30 minutes. Miami broke open the scoring in the 40th minute on a rebound off an Iona clear attempt from 20-yards out to take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

Iona looked to answer early in the second half, drawing a foul well in the Hurricanes end in the 48th minute. Senior Marissa Graziano sent in a low free kick shot towards the right post from 15-yards out. Arango was right there to secure the rebound fired the chip shot in at the doorstep to knot the game up at 1-1.

The two sides traded looks on target over the next 25 minutes as Kalbaugh made three saves on goal while Avarie Gonzalez turned aside two Iona attempts for the Hurricanes.

Miami pulled ahead using strong pace in the attacking third to tally back-to-back goals in the 74th and 78th minute to take the matchup.
