Iona WSOC Drops Road Matchup at Rider

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Iona University women's soccer team fell to Rider, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Ben Cohen Field. Two second-half goals by the Broncs proved to be the difference as the Gaels held a 15-12 advantage in shots but were unable to find the back of the net in the Metro Conference setback.

THE RUNDOWN

Rider dictated the tempo early in the match, using four off-target attempts over the opening 22 minutes to keep the pressure on. Iona picked things up offensively over the second half of the opening period with four shots of its own. Rookie Lauren DeLaurentiis nearly broke the deadlock in the 27th minute with a dangerous strike that rattled off the right post, while junior Sofia Bigeni carved out a clean look on goal in the 31st minute that forced a sharp save from Rider's Ashley Moore to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.

The Broncos seized control early in the second stanza. The home side struck first in the 53rd minute on a right footed shot from 15-yards out. Before the Maroon & Gold could fully recalibrate, Rider doubled its advantage in the 61st minute with a shot from dead center off the box on a rebound off an Iona clearance attempt on a cross in. Iona responded with furious pressure through the remaining half-hour, out shooting Rider 11-8 in the second half alone, but could not find the net.
