Iona Softball Falls to Princeton in Weekend Finale

JACKSONVILLE, FL — The Iona University Softball team capped its trip to Florida on Sunday morning with a 7-5 setback to Princeton at UNF Softball Complex. The Gaels battled back with the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but the Tigers prevailed to take the weekend finale.
 
The Gaels posted a season-high 10 hits as a team with the top three batters in the order contributing seven of them. Rookie Rachael Morales batted leadoff and tallied her first three-hit game, two runs scored and run batted in for Iona. Sophomore Sara Piña tallied two hits. Senior Brianna Fischer also posted two hits and three runs batted in.

GAME SUMMARY

Princeton struck first in the finale with a four-run opening inning on an RBI groundout and three-run home run for the 4-0 advantage.
 
The Gaels answered in the next half inning as Morales led off with a single up the middle. Piña followed with a double to right center. Fischer cleared the bases with a two-RBI triple to left center. After a strikeout, senior Hailey Guerrero lined a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Fischer and make it a 4-3 ballgame.
 
Princeton pushed the lead back to two on an RBI infield single in the top of the second. The Tigers then added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning with a three-hit frame with one out to jump out in front 7-3.
 
Iona's offense got restarted in the bottom of the fourth on a one-out single up the middle by graduate student Kenadie Gonzalez. Senior Alivia Lichtner followed with a double to left field, but the Tigers got the lead runner out at third base. After a walk to senior Hannah Werth, Morales stepped to the dish and lined an RBI single to left center to make it a 7-4 game.
 
Both offenses were quite for the next two innings. The Gaels got to the bottom of the seventh looking to rally. Morales led things off with a single and Piña followed with a single to left field. Fischer then added her second extra base hit of the game with an RBI double to left field. Princeton escaped trouble as Iona had the tying run in scoring position with three straight groundouts to end the game.
 
Junior Allison Hoppe pitched the first five innings for the Gaels, picking up a season-high five strikeouts. Rookie Melissa Gordon issued just one hit in the final two innings of relief.

UP NEXT

Iona heads to North Carolina next weekend for another five-game weekend at UNC Wilmington. The Gaels open the weekend on Friday, February 20 with two games against Lafayette and UNC Wilmington at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Boseman Field.
