ALBANY, NY – The Iona University men's basketball team fell, 79-72, to Siena in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at MVP Arena. The Saints used a strong second half and a decisive 13-0 run to erase a halftime deficit. Four players reached double figures for Iona, led by 20 points from graduate student
Toby Harris.
THE RUNDOWN
Iona led for all but 32 seconds of the opening half, with the score tied only once. Graduate
Lamin Sabally opened the scoring 17 seconds in on a feed from classmate
CJ Anthony. Siena answered on its first possession, but junior
Denver Anglin reclaimed the lead moments later and the Gaels never trailed again before the break.
The Maroon and Gold pushed the advantage to as many as 10 points late in the half when Anglin connected on the team's 10th three pointer with 28 seconds remaining. Justice Shoats beat the buzzer with a triple for the Saints, trimming the margin to 47-40 at halftime.
Iona shot 62.1 percent in the first half and knocked down 10 of 17 attempts from beyond the arc. Siena stayed within striking distance by converting 53.3 percent of its shots before the break.
An Anglin steal and finish with 13:11 remaining gave Iona a 57-50 lead. Siena responded with 13 unanswered points over the next five minutes, shooting 6-for-9 during the run while Iona went cold from the field. The Gaels answered with a 10-2 surge of their own, briefly regaining the lead on a freshman
Alliou Fall tip in with 5:37 to play.
The Saints closed the game on a 12-5 run, sealing the outcome at the free throw line with four makes in the final 20 seconds.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Harris led the way with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting, including 6-of-9 from three point range, while adding four rebounds and two steals.
- Anthony finished with 14 points to go along with five assists and two steals.
- Anglin scored 13 points, highlighted by three connections from long distance.
- Junior Kosy Akametu chipped in 10 points in the loss.
- Fall contributed across the board with four points, six rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots.
THE OPPONENT
- Gavin Doty posted a game-high 25 points and added 13 rebounds, four assists and three steals.
- Shoats followed with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting while handing out five assists and recording three steals.
- Francis Folefac recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, along with three assists and three blocks.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Siena shot 52.5 percent for the game compared to 45.9 percent for Iona, as the Gaels were held to 10-of-32 shooting in the second half.
- The Saints held a 35-27 rebounding edge, including an 11-10 advantage on the offensive glass and a 12-4 margin in second chance points.
- Both teams finished with 16 assists and 12 turnovers, while Iona held a 24-10 edge in points off turnovers.
- The Gaels went 14-for-31 from three point range, while Siena connected on 5-of-20 attempts.
