NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University Softball team continued its homestand at Donald E. Walsh Field with a doubleheader against Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats took the opener 10-2 before the Gaels countered with a 10-2 win of their own to split the first day of the weekend series.
Rookie Rachel Morales posted five hits between the two games and a pair of runs batted in. Senior
Brianna Fischer recorded three hits including a two-run home run in game two. Rookie
McKenzie Marranca registered three hits and a team-high four runs batted in. Senior
Hailey Guerrero tallied her 100
th career hit in the third inning of game two.
GAME ONE: QUINNIPIAC 10, IONA 2 (6 INN.)
The Bobcats pounced early and often with runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings on 12 hits to take a 9-0 lead.
Iona was held to just two hits in the first four innings as Morales and sophomore
Marylou Piazza reached on singles in the first and third innings.
The Gaels extended the game in the bottom of the fifth as Marranca recorded an infield single followed by a single from Piazza both with one out. After a groundout moved everyone into scoring position. Morales and Fischer recorded back-to-back RBI infield singles to get Iona on the scoreboard.
Quinnipiac punched back with a two-out single in the top of the sixth before capping the contest in the bottom of the sixth for the run rule win.
Junior
Allison Hoppe made the start and pitched the first three innings for Iona. Piazza came on in relief and pitched the last three innings.
GAME TWO: IONA 10, QUINNIPIAC 2 (5 INN.)
Iona looked to respond early in game two, working the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Sara Piña drove in the first run on an RBI sacrifice fly for the early 1-0 lead.
The Gaels followed that up with an RBI triple for Morales with two-outs in the second inning before Fischer made it a 4-0 ballgame after a two-run home run to right field.
Iona continued to tack on runs in the bottom of the fourth as Marranca registered her first two-run double before Guerrero went first pitch hunting and lined a double to the gap in left center for the 7-0 advantage.
Rookie
Melissa Gordon did stellar job quieting the Bobcats offense, issuing no hits and just two walks through the first four innings of play.
Quinnipiac utilized an Iona error in the fifth inning to extend the frame and capitalized with a two-run single to left field to chop the deficit to five.
Iona countered in the bottom of the inning as senior
Hannah Werth worked a walk before Morales lined a single down the left field line. After a pop out, senior
Brooke Acker laced an RBI single to left center. Marranca walked off the game with her second two-RBI double of the game to bring the final score to 10-2.
Gordon pitched the complete game for the Gaels, scattering three hits and a pair of walks. Iona had 11 hits for the game with five batters recording multiple hits.
