Iona WLAX Fall On The Road Vs Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Iona women's lacrosse fell 14-8 to Marist on Saturday afternoon at Tenney Stadium, as a strong opening half by the Red Foxes proved decisive despite a late push from the Gaels.

GAME SUMMARY

Marist seized control early, scoring twice in the opening minute of the first quarter. Iona responded when Alyssa Castellano converted a free-position opportunity, and she later added a second goal off an assist from Abby Axe. Despite those efforts, the Gaels trailed 5-2 at the end of the opening period.

In the second quarter, Marist extended its advantage to 9-2 before Lindsey Grove finished a feed from Kacie Scarduzio to halt the run. Goalkeeper Lauren Sweeney provided a steady presence in net, recording three saves in the quarter, including back-to-back stops that helped keep the deficit from growing further.

Iona found more rhythm in the third quarter as Castellano completed her hat trick on an assist from Maliya Haddock. Later in the period, Brie Gaccino delivered a key man-down goal. The remainder of the quarter featured a more controlled, possession-based pace as both teams traded defensive stops.

The Gaels made a push in the fourth quarter, capitalizing on player-up opportunities with goals from Jocelyn Smith, Sydney Grassi, and Haley Lauer. In the closing moments, Victoria Curreri secured a crucial ground ball and executed a clear to give Iona one final chance, but the last shot attempt by Grove was blocked as time expired.

Castellano led the offense with three goals, while Sweeney anchored the defense with several key saves under pressure. Curreri added three ground balls, including a pivotal late-game possession. Calen Norton contributed defensively with two caused turnovers and three shots on goal, and Amelia Kelley was active in transition with two ground balls and a draw control.

An early deficit ultimately proved too much to overcome, but Iona's late surge and success on man-up opportunities highlighted the team's resilience down the stretch.
