Iona Softball Edged Out by Merrimack, 3-2 in Series Finale

NORTH ANDOVER, MA — The Iona University Softball team closed out the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference weekend series with a 3-2 setback to Merrimack on Sunday afternoon. A quite day offensively, the Gaels were out hit by the Warriors 5-4 at Martone-Mejail Field.

Senior Brianna Fischer led the Maroon & Gold with a pair of hits and a run batted in. Senior Alivia Lichtner and sophomore Sara Piña recorded the other hits on the day.

GAME SUMMARY

Iona stuck first as Fischer recorded a two-out single in the top of the first and then stole second base. A misplayed ball off the bat of senior Brooke Acker allowed Fischer to score and give the Gaels the 1-0 lead.

Merrimack worked the count in the bottom of the first loading up the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, a two-run double followed to give the Warriors the 2-1 lead.

The Gaels finally countered in the top of the third as Lichtner worked a one-out walk then stole second base. Fischer drove her in with an RBI single to left field to knot the game up at 2-2. She advanced to third on a wild pitch before Merrimack escaped the inning with a strikeout.

The Warriors then worked a leadoff walk in the bottom of the third before back-to-back groundouts moved the runner into scoring position. An error in the infield allowed Merrimack to take a 3-2 lead.

Iona was held to just one hit over the next two innings, on a single from Lichtner in the fifth. The Gaels showed life in the sixth as Piña reached third on a fielding error with two outs. Merrimack once again evaded trouble with another inning ending strikeout.

A one-two-three top of the seventh allowed the home team to score the 3-2 victory and spoil Iona's shot at a weekend series sweep.

Junior Bella DiGiandomenico made the start in the circle for the Gaels. Rookie Melissa Gordon pitched the final five and two thirds, scattering four hits, two walks and one unearned run while striking out three.
