Iona WLAX Drops Weekday Contest At Home To LIU

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Despite a resilient effort at Mazzella Field, Iona University women's lacrosse fell to LIU, 11–7, on Wednesday afternoon.

GAME SUMMARY

The Gaels  and Sharks battled to a low scoring 3–3 tie at halftime, with Iona's defense holding firm and goalkeeper Lauren Sweeney making timely saves to keep the contest even.

LIU took control in the second half, outscoring Iona 8–4 over the final two periods to pull away. Ball security proved to be the difference in the game, the Gaels committed 13 turnovers compared to eight by the Sharks, while three shot clock violations stalled offensive momentum at key moments.

Maliya Haddock made an immediate impact in her first appearance of the season after missing time due to an injury last year, leading Iona's fourth-quarter surge with two goals, including a free-position conversion. Brianna Reynolds added two goals, scoring in both the second and third periods. Abby Axe contributed a goal and an assist, and Brie Gaccino recorded an assist.

In goal, Sweeney remained busy throughout the afternoon, turning aside 11 shots on 26 attempts to keep Iona within striking distance.

LIU held a narrow 26–23 advantage in total shots. Iona edged the Sharks in ground balls, 12–11, and the teams were even at the draw circle with 10 draw controls apiece. The Gaels successfully cleared 12 of their 17 attempts.
