Iona WWP Splits Second Day Of Convergence Tournament

ORANGE, CA – Iona women's water polo wrapped up their annual trip to the west coast with split in two games, losing a close contest to Cal Baptist and ending it with an offensive surge over La Verne.

GAME ONE

The Iona University women's water polo team showed fight against a ranked opponent on Saturday morning, but ultimately fell 14–10 to No. 22 California Baptist at the Allred Aquatics Center.

The Gaels opened the game with strong energy and controlled possession early, as Lola Trujillo won all four swim-offs to give Iona the first opportunity in every period. Iona stayed within striking distance throughout the first half and continued to pressure the Lancers offensively.

Trailing by just one entering the second quarter, the Gaels kept pace in a high-scoring contest and eventually tied the game at 8–8 midway through the third period. However, California Baptist capitalized on key man-up opportunities down the stretch to pull away.

The difference came on the power play, where the Lancers converted 5-of-9 chances while Iona finished 1-of-5.

Sadie Sallas led the Gaels offensively with a team-high four points, scoring three goals and adding an assist. Maleah Penman and Lola Trujillo each recorded three points, both finishing with two goals and an assist.

In goal, MJ Metzdorf played all 32 minutes and totaled nine saves along with two steals.

Iona generated plenty of offensive chances, out shooting California Baptist 40–32 and converting both of its penalty shots, but the Lancers' efficiency with the extra attacker ultimately proved decisive.

GAME TWO

The Iona Gaels put together a dominant showing on March 7, 2026, defeating the La Verne Leopards 19–2 at the Allred Aquatics Center. From the opening period, Iona set the tone and maintained control throughout the match, outscoring La Verne in every quarter.

Iona's offense was extremely efficient, converting 19 goals on 24 shots for an impressive 79.2% shooting percentage. The Gaels showcased balanced scoring across the roster, with multiple players producing big performances. Sadie Sallas and Anna O'Malley each scored four goals, while Ella Ferguson added three goals and an assist.

Fiona Rowe and Vanessa McNabb also contributed with two goals apiece, helping power the high-scoring effort. Iona was particularly effective on the power play, capitalizing on seven of its ten opportunities.

Defensively, the Gaels were just as strong. Goalkeeper MJ Metzdorf played all 32 minutes in the cage, finishing with six saves and allowing only two goals for a .750 save percentage. The Iona defense held La Verne to just 11 total shots and successfully shut down all six of the Leopards' power-play chances.

Several Gaels stood out in the victory. Sadie Sallas recorded four goals and drew two exclusions, while Anna O'Malley matched her with four goals and one drawn exclusion. Ella Ferguson added three goals and an assist to round out a strong offensive performance.
