Iona WLAX Falls To Merrimack On Senior Day

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona University women's lacrosse team concluded its 2026 campaign with a 12-6 loss to Merrimack on Saturday afternoon at Mazzella Field. Prior to the contest, the Gaels honored their seven seniors — Arianna Burns, Victoria Curreri, Sabrina Faulkner, Sydney Grassi, Lindsey Grove, Maliya Haddock, and Lauren Sweeney in a pregame Senior Day ceremony.

Despite a strong opening half that saw the Maroon & Gold hold an early lead, a decisive second-half surge by the Warriors proved to be the difference as Iona finished the season at 3-13.

Iona came out with strong energy, quickly answering an early Merrimack goal as Calen Norton found the back of the net off an assist from Kacie Scarduzio, who paced the offense throughout the afternoon and recorded her 100th career point in the contest. After briefly trailing, the Gaels took control late in the first quarter, with Alyssa Castellano and Sydney Grassi each scoring to give Iona a 3-2 advantage. Grassi also controlled the draw throughout the game, finishing with a team-high five draw controls.

Castellano extended the lead to 4-2 early in the second quarter, again converting on a feed from Scarduzio. Castellano led the team with two goals on five shots, while Scarduzio finished with a team-best five points (1 goal, 4 assists) to go along with a ground ball and a caused turnover.

Merrimack responded before halftime, scoring three of the final four goals of the period to even the score at 5-5 heading into the break.

The momentum shifted entirely in the third quarter, as the Warriors held Iona scoreless while netting four goals of their own. Defensively, Victoria Curreri led the effort with four ground balls and a caused turnover, while goalkeeper Lauren Sweeney turned aside seven shots in net against 19 shots on goal.

Merrimack continued its run into the fourth quarter, stretching the scoring streak to seven unanswered goals before Scarduzio broke the drought with a free-position goal at the 3:13 mark.
