Iona WSOC Drops Road Matchup at Villanova

VILLANOVA, PA. — The Iona University women's soccer team suffered its first setback of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling to Big East foe Villanova, 11-0, at Higgins Soccer Complex. 

Junior Kayla Kalbaugh made four first-half saves and finished with a season-high six stops overall, while the Maroon & Gold saw extended minutes from its depth across both halves.

THE RUNDOWN

Villanova jumped out to an early lead, opening the scoring in the second minute before adding two more goals over the next 15 minutes. The Wildcats added three more before halftime to take a 6-0 advantage into the break. The hosts continued to control play in the second half, adding five goals to close out the contest. Villanova finished the afternoon with a 27-1 advantage in shots and an 18-0 edge in shots on goal over the Gaels. Kalbaugh made six saves in 68 minutes of action. Senior Isabella DeGiovanni and first-year Addison Bowles closed the match in goal, combining for one save over the final 21 minutes.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Kalbaugh anchored the Gaels in goal for 68 minutes with a season-high six saves.
  • Rookie Ainsley Lyon generated Iona's lone shot of the match, a blocked attempt in the 36th minute that came from a well-built possession spell.
  • DeGiovanni stepped in for the final 12 minutes and added a save during Villanova's late push.

UP NEXT

Iona returns home on Saturday to begin Metro Conference play with an 11 a.m. matchup against Mount St. Mary's in the opening game of a doubleheader at Mazzella Field.
