John Mateyko enters his second season on the Iona men's basketball staff after joining the program in the Summer of 2018 as director of operations.  Mateyko brings more than two decades of coaching experience and 250 career wins to New Rochelle after spending the last two years as director of athletics and men's basketball head coach at Five Towns College in Dix Hills, N.Y.
 
A member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), Five Towns posted a 13-6 mark in 2017-18 and completed the season ranked No. 19 the the D2 Power Rankings. The Sound held the eight best winning percentage among the 52 USCAA D2 programs. Five Towns led the nation in steals per game (14.0 spg) and was third in rebounding (46.7 rpg) and fifth in scoring (88.3 ppg). Defensively, the Sound led the country with 23.9 turnovers forced per game and ranked second in defensive three-point field goal percentage (27.9%) and eighth in field goal percentage defense (40.6%). Matekyo led Five Towns to a thrilling 94-87 victory over No. 2 Villa Maria on Feb. 2, 2018. He reached the 250 career-win milestone in 2017-18 in the final contest of the season over King's College.
 
In the two years prior to joining Five Towns, Mateyko was head coach at Dowling College in Oakdale, N.Y. The Golden Lions posted a 26-30 record in the two seasons coached by Mateyko. In his first season, Mateyko led the program to an East Coach Conference (ECC) semifinal appearance as the No. 6 seed.
 
Mateyko began his NCAA career as a head coach at Division III St. Joseph's College in 2001. In his 13 years in Patchogue, N.Y., Mateyko led the program to a 199-146 record, and remains the program's winningest coach. During his tenure, the Golden Eagles had six Skyline Conference tournament appearances, winning the championship in 2009, three ECAC tournament appearances, and two trips to the NCAA tournament. Mateyko was named Skyline Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2012, and was honored with the Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award in 2008.
 
Mateyko is a graduate of American International College where he received a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and a Master's degree in Human Technology. A long-time friend of coach Cluess, Mateyko once served as an assistant at St. Mary's High School in Manhasset, NY alongside the Gaels' skipper.
