Christine Wonica

Christine Wonica joined the Iona University softball coaching staff as the assistant coach in September 2025. Wonica comes to New Rochelle after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach at the College of Staten Island.

Wonica served as the Dolphins pitching coach the last two seasons. Prior to her arrival the team posted a 5.73 earned run average, ranking last in the East Coast Conference. Over the course of two seasons under Wonica’s tutelage the team lowered its ERA to 3.94, ranking third in the conference in 2025. She coached one All-Conference second team honoree, Kennedie Ruth who ranked among the conference leaders with a 3.41 ERA, eight complete games and 70 strikeouts in 2025.

Her previous coaching stops include a 15-year stint as an assistant coach at her alma mater, St. John Villa High School. She also spent time coaching the Staten Island Saints travel ball team for five seasons and has worked as both a Physical Education teacher and Assistant Athletic Director at Notre Dame High School.

She was a standout pitcher for the Bears, and in 1992 earned the Al Smith Cup, which is awarded to the most outstanding softball player on Staten Island. She then embarked on a four-year career at Long Island University Brooklyn. Wocina, née Dragula appeared in 89 games in the circle for the Blackbirds with 45 career complete games. She earned 25 wins with 153 strikeouts and a 2.86 career ERA.

Wonica is a two-time graduate of LIU Brooklyn with a Bachelor degree in Psychology ’96 and a Master of Science degree in Sports Medicine ’98.
